My wife and I stayed two nights at the Hotel Grotta dell'Angelo, Via Gioia 47, in Gubbio at the end of October. It is a small family-run hotel located above the restaurant of the same name on one of the quaint, almost alley-like, streets of this marvelous medieval city. Because the streets are very narrow and parking often difficult to find, we parked our car in the monitored lot at Piazza 40 Martiri a few blocks from the hotel, which will stamp the parking ticket so you can get a discount. (i.e., The parking pay station is at a window along the Via della Repubblica about a half block up the hill from the parking lot entrance.)
Hotel Grotta dell'Angelo's rooms are simple and relatively small, but spotlessly clean and comfortable. The shower bath was tight but quite adequate. Because the hotel is located on a narrow street, it was very quiet, which made for a good night's rest. Breakfast, which was optional, was fairly standard, with good breads and cake, orange juice, and coffee/tea. Our room was 58 euros per night for the two of us, with breakfast. The ristorante on the ground floor was also very good and very reasonably priced, serving many local specialities, as well as standard Italian fare, much of it cooked over the open fire in the large fireplace adjacient to the dining area. The smell and warmth of the wood fire on a cool evening was very pleasant. Nearly all of their clientel were Italians.
Laura Cecchini is the vey friendly and helpful owner/manager of the hotel. Although she apologizes for her lack of English, it is actually quite good. I made the reservation via email from the hotel's website at ----, where there are some photos of the restaurant and typical rooms.
If you are interested in a charming, small, reasonably priced hotel within the historic area of Gubbio, I would recommend Hotel Grotta dell'Angelo. We hope to go back sometime.
