I cannot say enough good things about my stay at Palazzo Minciotti. It is Italy as we Americans hope and want it to be: charming surroundings, gorgeous views, and the owners, who also live in the palazzo, are graciousness and helpfulness personified. I stayed in Santa Rosa, the smallest of the three apartments, which is huge…I was on my own, but there’s plenty of room for a couple with a small child. Anna Maria and her husband have truly tried to think of everything to make your stay pleasant and carefree..beginning with the bottle of wine and chocolates left on the dining table for your arrival. The rooms were spotless, the kitchen very well stocked, and, for longer stays, you will be very grateful for the washing machine. The apartment is super convenient: right in the heart of old Assisi, next to the Romanesque church of San Ruffino, steps away from great restaurants, food stores, and other shops. And also only a few minutes’ walk from public parking (a real plus if you have a car). The wonderful garden (lovingly tended by Anna Maria) is large and on three levels…so you can always find a quiet private spot to relax, even if other guests are using it. There’s a charming, wisteria-draped pergola where you can dine al fresco or enjoy a drink. The swimming pool, tho’ small, is cool and inviting after a summer day of sightseeing. You will feel you are in the country, even tho’ the bustling Piazza San Ruffino is just over the wall. A word about Assisi: There is plenty to do and see right in and around the city. But it is also a great base for exploring the rest of Umbria, and is a more “user-friendly” (especially in terms of parking) and picturesque town than its larger neighbor Perugia. But then again, life is so pleasant at the Palazzo Minciotti, you may wish to just spend the day at home.
