We stayed here for three nights and could easily have done more (if I had the time). We were arriving on the late train from Rome - around 10 pm - and Gabriella kindly arranged a taxi to meet us, and she was there to greet us on arrival. This was exactly what we needed to orient ourselves and prepare for getting the most out of our short stay in Assisi. Thanks to all the team at Hotel Hermitage, they made our stay most enjoyable.
Along with recommendations on what to see and how to get there, Gabriella also gave us several restaurant recommendations, focusing on the local cuisine 'non-touristy' kind, which is exactly what we wanted. We tried two of these places - i Monaci and Pallotta, and had great food and wine both nights, also at reasonable prices for our dollar (Australian).
We had a room on the 1st floor, which had a lovely view from the window. The room itself was on the small side for two friends travelling together, yet this wasn't a huge issue. The room and bathroom were spotlessly clean each day. There is also the bonus of a small fridge and mini-bar. Good Wifi access in the rooms also rates highly for me. Remember too that you're staying in Assisi, and you won't mind the church bells that ring at an early hour...
The breakfast was one of the best I had in my two-week stay in Italy. Fresh fruit, pastries, selection of cereals, yoghurft and made-to-order espresso coffee. There is also a beautiful outside terrace just down from the reception area, a great place to have lunch or a drink. The wifi also works there.
For Assisi itself, what a beautiful place, and all within easy walking distance of Hotel Hermitage. Assisi is highly walkable all over in two days, with its attractions including the Basilica (go on a guided tour with one of the Brothers and hear about the history of St Francis and more - fascinating), the Roman forum and temple of Minerva, and the Rocca (fortress), right at the top of the hill. Perhaps though the greatest joys of Assisi is in meandering the streets and admiring the architecture, vistas, peace and natural beauty of the place.
I'll be back one day, and I hope it's soon. :-)
