My wife and I stayed one night at Hotel Ideale in mid-September 2011. The hotel sits at the highest end of town, and is conveniently located at the last bus stop from the train station (Piazza Matteotti). The owner of the hotel speaks limited English, but we were able to communicate well enough to check in, and he was polite. I believe that what other reviewers have concluded is a rude or gruff attitude from the owner may be more accurately attributable to the owner’s shyness or limitations understanding English speaking guests. He certainly runs a nice hotel, and another staff member managing the front desk late at night was very friendly and easy to communicate with.
We asked for, and received, a room with a balcony and unobstructed view of the Umbrian valley and countryside. The views are stunning, as can be seen in the pictures posted by the Trip Advisor reviewers. Our room was on the same floor as the check in desk, just to the left and behind the check in area. The room was not on the back of the hotel, but on the corner. The balcony was small, but big enough to sit and enjoy a drink, and to marvel at the beauty of the area. The hotel has a backyard garden terrace that is perfect for enjoying a drink while watching the sunset, or visiting with other hotel guests about their travels and experience in Assisi.
Our room was clean and very comfortable, with room for a dresser and armoire for clothes, and a comfortable king size bed, but not much extra space to spread out. The bathroom was small, but had a nice shower with pressure, and a shower door, and a neat little window with views of the beautiful countryside. We paid only about 80 EU, which was the most reasonably priced room we stayed at during our Italy vacation. We had to leave so early the next morning that we did not get to have breakfast. On checkout, the owner asked if I could pay in cash, but accepted my credit card when I explained I didn’t have enough cash.
Assisi is a charming, clean, beautifully preserved medieval town. In addition to spending 2-3 hours in St. Francis Basilica, if possible, I would recommend exploring the town for at least another 3-5 hours. The town empties at night, and is very peaceful with lots of small, winding streets, nice restaurants and specialty shops.
When we arrived at the Assisi train station, there was a large crowd at the train station. The bus took more than 15 minutes to arrive, and there was a long line to board. If you are staying at Hotel Ideal, the last stop of 3 stops on the bus, I would recommend taking a taxi if you want to save time. We shared a taxi with another couple staying at a different hotel in Assisi, for only about 10 EU for each couple. The driver sped up to the Hotel Ideal in a matter of minutes, and the price was very reasonable. You may want to consider calling ahead for a taxi, as there seemed to be a shortage of taxis, at least when we arrived at the train station, around 2:30 p.m.
