The hotel is well-located very near the Basilica of St. Frances. The breakfast buffet was included in the price and it was very good, including fruit, yogurt, cakes, meat, breads, juice, and all the caffe latte you could possibly want. The room was small and the bathroom miniscule. The price at 95 Euro seemed high, but we just walked in off the street with no reservation. We ended up moving to another hotel--Hotel Duomo near the church of San Ruffino--half the price and twice the room!

“Great Hotel across from Basilica San Francesco”

Just returned from a few-city trip with my elderly father-in-law. In Assisi, I chose the Hotel San Francesco based on feedback that I read on TripAdvisor. While Assisi is small, the location of this hotel is excellent, being in front of the Basilica. The staff was friendly, the rooms were small, but clean and functional, the breakfast was decent, and the on-site restaurant was good, but a little pricey. I've stayed at about 25 different hotels throughout Italy, and I'll stay at this hotel again.

If you travel up to the top of the hill behind the hotel (about 100 yards), there are several good restaurants with more traditional food at better prices.

Assisi is a WONDERFUL city. I'd recommend giving it a 1-2 day stay for a regular visit, or 4+ days for a very peaceful retreat.

“Wonderful Experience”

This hotel ended up being the highlight of our trip. We only stayed there one night, and I wish we could have stayed longer. I knew ahead that it was a converted monastery, so I was not surprised at the "modest" room accomodations. The staff was wonderful and the food was great. When going with a tour, I have found that you should understand that food for, say 40 people doesn't lend itself to "exceptionally wonderful" cuisine. It's good, don't misunderstand, but making food for a large group necessitates a certain amount of commerical style cooking. This is a good rule to remember if you are thinking about booking a tour where the meals are included. The patio on the roof was wonderful and the sunset was amazing. The town itself is wonderful, and the staff at the hotel was very understanding and we stayed out on the roof much longer than they probably would have liked us to. I will definitely be back!

“Outstanding Customer Service!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 May 2009

In mid-March 2009 my husband & I left out of California for a two week Globus tour of Italy. On the 12th night of our bus tour while in Venice my husband had been experiencing several days of increasing tooth & facial pain with headaches. The following morning we were scheduled to arive in Assisi & stay overnight at Hotel San Francesco. Our tour director called ahead to Hotel San Francesco & spoke with the manager about our situation. The hotel manager acted quickly & arranged for my husband to see his family dentist. Not only did he do that, but after my husband visited the dentist & underwent an emergency root canal, the San Francesco hotel manager himself made the drive in the pouring rain to the nearby town where the dentist was located to pick us up, take us to a pharmacy to fill my husband's prescription, & drive us back to Assisi. The Hotel San Francesco front desk staff were tremendously helpful in assisting us with receiving & sending faxes to our travel insurance company so that we would have all the information necessary for filing a proper insurance claim. We were very impressed with the level of understanding & assistance we received from everyone who worked at the hotel. We were so relieved that the San Francesco hotel manager had pretty much solved our problem because it is highly likely had he not gone to the lengths he did we would have canceled our trip & returned home to California. Instead, with his help we were able to finish our Globus trip & stay an additional week to continue enjoying Italy. Now that is what I call excellent customer service, above & beyond the call of duty! Additionally, the hotel is perfectly situated, within the walls of the old town, just a short, easy walk to the Basilica of St. Francis. Our room was clean, cozy, & comfortable. I dined with our Globus group in the hotel dining room. The food was very good, the staff friendly, the service prompt. I would by all accounts recommend this hotel to anyone considering a visit to Assisi. Assisi is a lovely, clean, charming town, well worth spending at least one full day & night or longer.
