“Best position”

We were booked into another hotel just down the road and upon arrival and checking in we were advised they were having water problems and had booked us into Albergo San Francesco. Our triple room was generous in size but as so many other reviews have stated it is dated(found the cotton - not towelling - bathtowels different!) We tried to put the air conditioning on as it was warm and our room was in front of the hotel and was noisy especially at night, we didnt have any luck so my partner went to the front desk and was advised by the night staff that they control use of A/C thru the hotel and to open the window if we were hot! Once told the noise was bad and we couldnt get to sleep - the A/c was switched on but only for 30mins! The breakfast was fantastic; great variety and I had the best panna cotta in all of Europe!! On arrival we also were offered a 3 course meal for 22 euros which we agreed to and it was pretty good - the food is served from turines and platters at your table and we had a great laugh as we ordered the lamb for main course and my partner ended up with 8 lamb loin chops and myself 6 for us which was a real treat because meat in Australia is so expensive.. Also the hotel has the most magnificent views on the rooftop gardens over San Francesco Basicilla and the valleys. It is in a good position with plenty of cafes and ristorantes and supermarkets to choose from and everything is easy walking distance albeit hilly!

“Out-dated but clean!”

We stayed at this hotel as part of a tour of Italy. We were a group of 3 on our tour. The room which we got was a descent size, but some of our tour friends said that our room was large compared to the rooms that they were staying in. The rooms are very simple and have out-dated wall paper/decor and bedding, but they are fairly clean, which is the most important thing. In our triple room, we had a double bed, and 2 single beds. When we ran our hands over the beds, we could feel either the box springs or knotting in the mattresses. However, the beds were more comfortable than what we thought they were going to be. Our tour included dinner at the hotel. The dinner was good (but not memorable) and it was filling. It included salad, soup and pasta, 2 meats, cauliflower, bread, fennell, and a pastry dessert that I think had apples and raisins in it. We bought a little bottle of wine which cost 5 euros. Breakfast was good, but we had a greater selection at other hotels that we stayed at. The creme caramel was really good, as was the blood orange juice and the apple/raisin (?) pastry. Note to travellers with mobility issues: it is a steep climb from where the tour buses let you off near the bottom of the hill. It is better to take a taxi up to the hotel/sites. The hotel is right near the San Francesco Basilica. It is also a steep climb to St. Chiara's Basilica.

“An amazing experience! Old and quaint but comfortable.”

Assisi was one of our favourite places of all in Italy. The hotel was minute....we have a photo of my husband squeezed very tightly into the tiny bath, which was hilarious, but just added to the quaintness of the whole experience. The hotel is steeped in history and we regarded it as a privilege to stay there. The views from the roof-top over the Basilica and the beautiful country-side were breathtaking. I couldn't use the lift - it was just too claustrophobic for me, but the spiral staircase down was an exciting adventure anyway. Our room looked out over the street, and we loved being able to watch the people going about their business. The bed was small but comfortable. We'd love to return.

“Great location!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2011

The rooms seem a bit dated. The room was decent size for other rooms in Italy, however it seemed dated. The bed was just ok for comfort. The place just seemed like it could be updated.

The breakfast was fine with a broad selection of food.

The view from the Basilica side of the property cannot be beat in that town.
