“Be very careful and be aware of negatives here”

Booked two nights with two rooms. Not part of a group and were not paid much attention. This place clearly caters to upscale groups that are always coming and going. Our rooms were really poor, even tho having "the view". Air conditioning barely worked in one room and was nonexistent in other. Desk said "no air-conditioning works in Italy" ! Gave us new room, huge but no phone, no clock, mold in shower and door knobs that pulled off! This is not a cheapo hotel! Location is superb, very short walk to cathedral. Desk staff was non-Italian, non-helpful and plain rude. Other staff was very nice. Would never recommend this place unless you get view room, but other places must be better.

“This hotel is like a step back in time"”

After reading the previous reviews, I was nervous about what we'd find when we arrived with our tour group. What we found was a hotel out of a 1940's movie. Charming, certainly not elegant, but oozing with Umbrian ambiance. Beautiful Assisi is not New York, nor even Rome. It is an Italian village in the country, albeit with more cathedrals than most big cities.
We were fortunate to get a room, actually a suite, on the valley side with a balcony and a breathtaking view . The bathroom was huge and quirky, with a shower in the bathtub that was somewhat difficult to use, but a wonderful towel warmer that dried our wash quickly (we were without enough clothes because Air France lost our luggage for four days).
I could add many other comments, some in agreement with the criticisms previously posted, but the Hotel Subasio and Assisi was the highlight of our Italian visit. If I live long enough I will return there.

“Back In Time - Fabulous accommodations”

Our stay was fabulous. Please keep in mind that hotels in Italy are not like hotels in America! As Italian hotels went, this was wonderful. The view of the valley was breath-taking. We had a room with a balcony and could see the Bascilica as well as the valley. It was quiet, clean, small shower, but hey, we were there for the history and couldn't have asked for more. The food in the hotel was good and served our needs very well. Service was very good and it contained all the "Old-World Charm" you could ask for. I'd stay there again and again. In fact, am contemplating another visit to Assisi and would ask for the same room.

“Beautiful views but disastrous stay”

Lovely views from the hotel and beautiful Reception area but this is where it ends.

The service was appalling and everything I touched in the room, did not work – hairdryer, air conditioning, window, there was no safe in the room despite being told by Reception twice that there was and water for the shower was stone cold. My luggage was left sitting outside my room for 2 hours. When I arrived, I was checked into a dirty room.

The room that I occupied was on the inside so overlooked a narrow street which was very noisy as the sound of people talking as they walked past echoed up to my room.

Also, the food & cutlery at breakfast kept running out and was not replenished quickly.

Glad we were only here for one night.

“USE ONLY IN EMERGENCY”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2010

Great location and decent buffet breakfast and not much more. Dark, drab, dull lobby a relic of its last 1970's era redecoration. In Oct 2010, a sewer was being dug directly outside the hotel, with odor of raw sewage directly into hotel. Avoid street facing rooms at all costs. Rooms are extremely ugly with no pictures or wall hangings, only bare, painted nails, suggesting that walls have been bare for a lengthy period. No carpeting or rugs, mis-matched furniture, lumpy bed. New tiny flat screen TV with no Enlish language stations and no instructions on how to use - or no notices of any type. The bath is large enough, but soap is razor thin, hair blower in #512 not operating, very difficult hand-held shower located at bath level. No radio either, so sing yourself to sleep as a penance for staying in a property with monastic rooms that desperately need renovation and a caring management. In a meeting with the manager, he expressed no interest in the condition of his rooms and no desire to be helpful. Hotel Minerva across street only 2 stars and no AC, but much brighter in appearance, and excellent inexpensive restaurant. Subasio rated as 4 stars, but only 3 stars at best. Nearby Hotel Giotto is 4 stars and has new rooms and much better management attitude.
