The staff is lovely during the day and are extremely helpful. The breakfast was fantastic and the breakfast room is peaceful and filled with antiques. Our room was small but adequate. The TV was tiny and did not carry CNN or any English speaking news channels at all. The location was very good; a short walk to the bus, to St Francis basilica and many local trattorias.
The challenge that I must report is that of the smoking policy.....it's not enforced. We asked for a non-smoking room and although the hotel was not full, they placed us next door to a smoking couple. We could smell the smoke from their room as it came from their balcony and into our room despite the windows being closed. Plus, because the walls were so thin I could hear every last word they spoke (and they spoke loudly).
When I reported this to the evening desk clerk he said there was nothing he could do. There is a large sign in the lobby that stated "NO SMOKING". So, we woke when they woke each morning because of their smoking and they were so loud (and the walls were thin) and we woke at night with their smoking.....lucky for us they went to bed fairly early around 11 pm.
If they were not going to enforce the "no smoking" policy, I believe they should have placed us away from a smoking room because the hotel was fairly empty.
We stayed for 3 nights and loved this hotel in every other way.
Room Tip: Some rooms have excellent views but we did not get one of those rooms despite the hotel being almost...
