“The most unique hotel we stayed at on our trip - and a lifetime of memories for my children”
This is not a conventional hotel - rather, it is an 800 year old castle converted into a small B&B in the countryside just outside of Siena. It is hard to find - especially if you are arriving at night by car - but once you arrive, you will be amazed. The lobby is a dimly lit ward covered by a four story high ceiling with vaulted arches holding it up. The rooms are all up a steep stone stairs to the side. The decor of our room was clean and comfortable, but rustic and has a definite 19th century antique feel about it - entirely appropriate for staying in an 800 year old hotel room. My children spent hours running around the property playing who-knows-what imaginary Renaissance Tuscan adventure. Breakfast was upstairs, in the dining on the top floor of the castle, where the family that runs the hotel lives. After breakfast, Nicola led us through his library to a spiral stairs that led up to one of the look out towers, giving us amazing views of Siena and the surrounding countryside. My children still talk about their stay in this hotel as one of the highlights of Italy.
One minor warning: there are cats on the premises (not in the rooms, although they roam freely in the common areas, no doubt keeping this 800 year old structure rodent free). This is probably not a bother for 90% of travelers and certainly didn't bother us either, but for that other 10%, be advised.
