“Frances Lodge - the perfect place to stay in Siena”

If you have some sort of transportation (car, bicycle, anything) for the few km trip to town, Frances Lodge must be the premier spot to stay during your visit to Siena. Browse their website and you can see all the various amenities they provide, including their wonderful view of the Siena skyline. The arrangements are well described on their site (and certainly not mis-represented), but the site doesn't convey the real gems - Frances and Franco themselves. Friendly, accessible, helpful, knowledgeable, and well prepared, they are an invaluable resource for anything you might want to know about Italy/Tuscany/Siena, suggested day trips, dinner or tour reservations, etc. They personally serve each morning's breakfast in their lovely, shaded garden overlooking the Tuscan landscape, and Frances takes time to visit each table to greet her guests, answer any questions, and make helpful suggestions for the day's activities. They are genuinely friendly, caring and helpful, but not overbearing or pushy. In response to my expressed interest, Franco took time to tell me about his family's history with grape vineyards, his move to their present farm (the site of Frances Lodge), his beloved olive trees and organic olive oil process, and their methods of growing high quality Saffron. My wife and I were with them for several nights and truly hated to leave. Perfect location. Perfect amenities. Great food (try their picnic under the gazebo). Restful environment. But most of all, a real touch of Tuscan personality, friendship and hospitality. We would go back in a minute.

Room Tip: We were there in July when even the Tuscans were saying it was particularly hot. After two nights o...

“Just perfect - idyllic and welcoming - best of the best”

We've always worked to find special and unique places to stay during our annual trips to Europe, and Frances' Lodge is among the best we've ever found. Siena is our favorite spot in Italy, and this place is one reason for that. Their farm is just outside Siena, and we enjoyed looking across the hills to see the city walls and towers glowing red as the sun set. Getting to Siena is not difficult by taxi, public transport or rental car. The lodge and surrounding grounds are so comfortable and beautiful you may want to curtail your touring plans around Tuscany and just relax! Frances and Franco are as helpful and charming as any hosts you'll ever find. Trust them to point you to some wonderful restaurants and special experiences - one afternoon we followed Franco's careful directions and found ourselves walking into a remote monastery just in time to hear monks start their haunting Gregorian chants, the only visitors, and an unforgettable experience. Can't recommend this special place enough.

“The White Room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

We spend 3 nights at Frances Lodge. Franco and Franca and doggies made us so very welcome. Our room had a small private outside seating area with view of Siena. Marvellous breakfast outside in the garden. Appreciated the assistance with planning and the use of the cell phone for taxi's etc. Great swimming pool. Spent every afternoon soaking up the sun. Our room was wonderful, comfortable. Our last night was spent enjoying an outdoor picnic and watching the sunset over Siena. Memories we will always cherish.

Room Tip: white room. private small outside patio area off room. 2 entrances

“Best part of my Italian vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2011

Frances and Franco were the best. Welcoming and helpful from the first moment to the last. Each morning after breakfast - which was great - they would sit down with me and map out an itinerary complete with maps and detailed directions. Each itinerary was clear and I never got lost. They also helped me to rent a car, which I highly recommend doing. With a car so many more places can be reached easily and driving in Tuscany was fine for me. No issues. I also recommend spending 4-6 days here so that you can really relax and take your time visiting the different little villages.

Room Tip: I stayed in the Moroccan room, which was beautiful in the morning as the sun just streamed in lighti...

“Perfect spot: Close to Siena, Tuscan Farmhouse feel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

We don't have much to add to the previous reviews. We too LOVED the setting, the old world farmhouse, the food and especially the hosts, Frances and Franco.

They offered recommendations for our daytrips to the local villages, complete with map and hand-written notes. They booked a winery tour for several of the guests at a place that was almost dream-like in its Tuscan beauty.

For those who are looking for rooms with high-end furnishings and finishes like travertine marble, this won't be the spot for you. For those looking to feel welcomed and enjoy a genuine Tuscan experience, you can't go wrong at the rustic Frances Lodge.

Purchase a bottle of the Chianti reserve for approximately 12 Euro and enjoy watching the sunset on the patio with a pool and Siena view. We stayed in the room right there...the Junior Suite and really enjoyed it. There is a living area, kitchenette, bathroom, upstairs bedroom and an extra sitting room or bedroom on the main floor. I'm posting a photo of the covered patio and a view from the upstairs bedroom. Internet access is from the library area of the lodge. We loved having a car....because we could explore on some very quiet roads. The driving was a lot easier than we thought!

Room Tip: Patios are public areas..but the patio outoside our Junior Suite was usually left for us!
