“Not as luxurious as expected, car required for everything, no proper restaurant.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2010

This place was sold to us as something really special, worth paying abit extra for. It was nice, but there were too many things were wrong with it. We don't like to have to drive everywhere, and were told there was a resturant on site. I expected a place very close by with a menu that you could choose from, open for both lunch and dinner, and with reasonable opening hours. Instead there is a set dinner menu of 3 or 4 courses (you don't always want to eat that much on a hot holiday) served at a set time, and the restaurant is at reception which is a fair distance from the accommodation along a dusty dark road. Although the food was very good, this was really not what we were led to expect - and it was expensive. We were told there was air con at an extra charge - I can't remember the exact amount but it was completely extortionate, maybe 80 euros? This place has a feel of trying to squeeze as much extra money out of guests as possible once it has you there, which I hated. When I pay for a holiday, I don't want to be charged extra for air con, or a walk to look at the stars at night, or cleaning at the end of the stay (although to be fair this seems to be a standard rip-off practice in Italian properties). Nor did I like the guest information in the accommodation telling you to leave the place exactly as you found it or they'll charge your credit card after you have left. Nasty tone. The road to the accommodation is atrocious, and got noticeably worse over the week that we were there. This means when you go out for dinner even one glass of wine is not an option as you have rally driving to do to get home. One evening they had a barbecue on site which we enjoyed. Eating in is not a great option, the place is equipped, there are even wild herbs rosemary and bay leaves growing outside, but there is ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING in the place, no salt, pepper, washing up liquid etc, so it gets difficult. To get anything, even a cold drink during the hot day, it's into the car and a drive along that hellish road to a supermarket...... we hated this and were happy to leave. We ate twice at the little hotel La Rennaie in Pancole, which was nice. The pool and gardens were nice, lovely view. Beware the wasps, kids were often stung. Accommodation was big, but not nearly as luxurious as we expected for the price. In summary, a disappointment. Tuscany is somewhere that everyone should go, but (speaking as a half Italian) give me Greece any day.

Dear Sir,
In response to your remarks, firstly we would like to express our dismay that you did not enjoy your stay with us. I would like to take a moment to reply to some of your remarks as customer service is something we take very seriously.

The road: the white roads of Tuscany are one of the factors that keep our territory special and beautiful, and if one seeks a holiday amongst the rolling hills and vineyards of Tuscany they realistically cannot expect to find this type of tranquil location next to a dual carriageway or asphalt road.

Based on your remarks I think a hotel with 24 hour services would of been more suitable for you. We are an "agriturismo" which means we are essentially a working wine estate farm who offer accommodation. Our apartments, and rooms country house have been rated as high standard in comparison to other agriturismo's. It would be an error to compare our services to those of a hotel.

The Restaurant: which is exclusively for guests, does offer an abundant set menu and obviously has opening times. Your booking agent should of informed you of this.

When staying in self catering accommodation ( villas or apartments ) fees for final cleaning and a deposit for breakages, are standard and to be expected in all countries, including Greece.

Again apologies that you did not enjoy your stay. Tuscany offers some wonderful 4/5 star hotels, which I think would meet your requirements if you were to return to Tuscany.

Regards,
Fattoria Santo Pietro

“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2010

What a beautiful place to stay. Set on over 5,000 acres (2050 hectares) of beautiful Tuscan countryside this is an absolute gem of a stopover. We spent a week here and could have easily stayed much longer. All the accommodations are well appointed apartment style rooms. As a family/friends group of 7 we had two units, each with two bedrooms and two bathrooms and a kitchen area, consisting of an induction cooktop, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, cookware, plates and cutlery, more than sufficient to produce many fine meals. The accommodations are spread out over the property, so this is a rural environment. The views were spectacular, the pool inviting and the staff were outstanding. Both Julie and Chiara, the reception area hosts, went above and beyond to help ensure our stay was more than memorable. Dr. Bruno's property walk was enjoyable and educational, but this is more a hike than a leisurely stroll, appropriate shoes are a must, but it is well worth the time spent. We only ate in the dining room once, but the meal was excellent and the estate wines all superb, fortunately they sell these wines at reception so it was easy to get more for the meals we made ourselves. A car is a must to stay here, San Gimignano is just 15 minutes away, Sienna is just under an hours drive. The main reception area and dining room is .5 of a kilometre or just over a third of a mile from the accommodation complex that we stayed in, some people walked, some drove, a secondary reception area, that also sold wine is located near the pool. Bar-b-ques, wood fired, are available for use in a communal area near the secondary reception area. Wi-Fi is available free of charge in the main reception building, there are no phones in the units.
Overall this a a wonderful, relaxing and beautiful place to stay. It is off the beaten track, so it it is wonderful place to rest and re-charge your batteries before tackling the busy and hectic adventures of the larger cities like Florence and Rome. We felt this location was a little too far to explore places like Montalcino or Monteipulciano, but it is near the beautiful sites of San Gimignano, Sienna and Volterra. Equally, we explored the town of Certaldo Alto, couldn't find it in any guide book, so on Julie's recommendation we went and weren't disappointed, this is a beautiful small gem hill town, almost unknown to the plethora of tourists you'll see everywhere else packing their tourist Guidebooks. A few of us (4) also took a cooking class offered on the estate with Chef Sedonia and assisted by Chiara. For almost three hours we had a great deal of fun and ended up taking back to our apartments enough food to feed seven very generously, with leftovers.
All of us would return to stay here again.
Notes, no maid service, towels and bedding only replaced once per week unless additional changes requested. Soap, shampoo supplied only in limited quantities as you are expected to provide these and other cleaning supplies like dish soap yourself. You are expected to leave the units tidy, dishes cleaned, fridges empty and the garbage removed, facilities for garbage and re-cycling are provided. Cost very reasonable

“Fantastics view, limited facilities, very remote”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2010

We travelled with 8 friends for a 50th. The place is very remote, and I did wonder whether we were on the right road. Directions were correct but you’re off the sat nav route, and on unmade tracks.
The actual accommodation was a 3 minute drive from reception. Not really walking distance.
The restaurant is situated above reception. It is good but there is only a ‘daily’ menu so it is very limited. Neither is it cheap….25 euro a head, without wine. The wine is also quite dear considering it is from the vineyard on site!! (5 to 10 euro.) Breakfast was a basic continental and cost 10 euro a head.

We stayed in an apartment that had 4 good sized double bedrooms, 3 en suite.
The lounge/dining/kitchen area was big but only one very tired 2 seater sofa.
There weren’t even any tea towels.
There is a hob, and a microwave/grill only. Self catering is not really an option, you don’t have a sharp knife, no condiments, washing up liquid etc.
We did a barbecue on site, which was pleasantly set up, but by the time you’ve bought everything…….salt/pepper and spices etc, worked out expensive and wasteful.

The views are stunning, and if the weather holds it is delightful, but if it doesn’t you are a bit stuck.

The local coop is in Certaldo, I did a run there for a couple of things and the round trip takes 1hour 5 mins. I wouldn’t have been in the shop more than 10 mins.

There are no restaurants there at all!!

The nearest place for eating is San Gimignano, about a 25 min drive. It is a beautiful walled town, but that means that you park outside (6 euro) and walk in. So if it rains you’ll need an umbrella. One of our group had a bad back and the walking was a killer for him.

Restaurants were good but all about the same price and menu. We always seemed to be more than 40 Euro a head with wine etc.

You’ll always be driving as taxis aren’t really an option. We had one, one day to Voltera about 50 mins away. The cost was 200 euro.

All in all I think they could make the place a lot better…..we were even charged 12 euro a head for cleaning when we checked out, and we still had to leave the place as we found it.

“Tranquil and Beautiful”

Our family stayed just 3 wonderful nights and remembered this property as the best we had stayed at on our trip through Italy. After the hectic and crowded environs of Venice, Florence and Pisa, Santo Pietro was pure heaven. Our midweek arrival put us into the most peaceful and tranquil surroundings. The rooms were clean, well laid out and appointed, and the aesthetic perfect for unwinding. Pool faciilities were first rate and meals at the main house were superb. The dinners were elegant and delicious as they were leisurely and relaxed. The wine from the vineyard was memorable and begged to be brought home. so we did. Our day trips to San Gimignano was easily managed.
