Conveniently located a world class javelin throw away from the hotel, is the thing you have come to see. Some 800 years ago the Tourism office in Pisa had a brain storming session. Absolutely nobody was visiting, and you couldn’t blame the crowded road network either. What Pisa needed was something to bring in the hoards, with credit cards flexing. The genius of building a landmark which is bent is the sign of a marketing man genius, possibly a relative of Gallileo and Norman Foster? Of course, Italy is awash with cowboy builders, and over a 150 years to construct it, they did a fine job. The first thing you discover as a car driver, is there is no on site parking so immediately you are handing over 8 more Euro for a nights parking. Needless to say there isn’t a free WIFI so that’s another 3 Euro an hour, for a painfully unreliable connection as well. In effect, you get a useable 30 minutes internet access, and what’s more the software makes it hard to ‘logout’ when you finished, so you don’t save your un-used time for later. The hotel makes a lot about the art to see … but its very basic stuff. A good draw when surfing the net for somewhere charismatic to stay, but the room made me laugh out loud when I opened the door. A very narrow bed, nowhere to unpack the bag (only the bed).
Expecting a view of the city perhaps?? WRONG. A view of the roof and all its drainage features, great if you are a plumber maybe but pants for those of us with normal jobs.. The breakfast was sparten to say the least; juice, cereal, croissant and a coffee, but who needs a ‘Full English’ anyway. The well publicised rooftop area is quite nice to sit out in, in the crisp cool morning air but there’s no worthwhile view as such. Without doubt though the big plus (and maximum marks out of 10) is the hotel is right on the entrance to the mall, in which the Leaning Tower is now a short walk, then hang a right and walk down straight to the river. So – it’s a slightly (probably an understatement, but it does keep the rain off) disappointing hotel experience, but superb location for the main sights. Your Euro, your choice.
