“The Best of Tuscany”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

The Albergo San Martino was our last stop in a two-week self-guided tour of Tuscany and what a pleasure to save the best for last.......This boutique hotel is an easy (flat) 5 minute walk from the train depot and the hostess that greeted us, Alessia, was the most delightful, helpful, knowledgeable and accomodating staff person EVER!!! The breakfast was also the best of the trip. We woke to the smells of Silvia's baking and the selection was amazing. We were thankful we could exercise off those homemade pastries and pies walking the beautiful city and wall during the days. The room was beautiful with a balcony off the bath. The hotel is VERY quiet and every room includes a safe and hairdryer. We changed our one night reservation to two and can not wait to return. We will tell everyone to add Lucca to their Italian vacations and book Albergo San Martino well in advance.

Room Tip: Lucca is an easy train ride from the airport in Pisa. Check a map to get to the hotel.

“fantanstic find”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

Right in the middle of lucca this boutique hotel ticketed all the right spots.
good bed and facilites. excellent shower room and convienent for getting into the town.
no problem was too much for Vincenzo
The only down side was no real seating area outside the hotel, but right next door to the square where there is plenty of small restaurants to embrace the town.

Room Tip: we asked for a choice and if you get in early you can pick from a selection

“Relaxation in the Middle of a Busy Holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

We stayed in Lucca in the middle of our big Italian holiday for relaxation purposes.
Albergo San Martino was everything we desired in accommdation.
The bathroom was a big surprise, as it had a jacuzzi. The only down fall was that it was a tad dusty and it seems it does not get used very often, this did not stop me giving it a quick rinse and then giving it a go with a glass of wine.
We sat outside on the outdoor tables every night for a drink and a recap on the days events.
It is very central to everything in Lucca and would highly recommend as a place to stay.

“Very rude staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2011

I had to check twice to see that I booked the same hotel that other travelers are speaking about here, as we have never experienced such rudeness at a hotel -- either in Italy or the US. The staff were extremely unaccommodating. We are very undemanding travelers, but we had an early train to catch and you would have thought we asked them to work overtime by letting us come to the breakfast room 15 minutes early to help ourselves to the breakfast that was already on the buffet table. We had asked the front desk gentleman the night before and he reluctantly agreed that we could come down early. However, upon arrival, we we were harshly reprimanded. Quote from a brunette woman making the breakfast "You are on holiday, madam. I think 8:00 is quite early enough." Followed by an exasperating gesture where she literally threw her hands up in the air and rolled her eyes. It was embarrassing and completely uncalled for. The room was average compared to the other 4 hotels we stayed in during our 2 week visit to Italy. The bathroom was nothing like those described in other reviews. Apparently there is a lot of variability at this property, which has been commented upon by other reviewers. Again we were appalled by the staff and certainly would not recommend this hotel on that basis alone.

‘Dear Madame,
Alessia is very sorry for the misunderstanding and now we try to clarify it.
She remembers that, asking you if everything was ok , you replied yes, but out breakfast started too late – She only said that.. “8:00 o’clock should not be ‘too late’ for a couple on holiday :-)”.
It wanted to be a sort of joke : she wanted to be friendly but not rude. …Maybe she could not explain it very well in English and due to this we want to apologize with you again.
We hope that you understand the situation and would like to return again to our hotel hoping that this clearance erase every negative feeling to us.
Best regards from all the Hotel’s Staff.

“Combines rustic tradition with great mod cons”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2011

As you draw up to the hotel it comes across as a very unassuming small pension. It has a charming, cosy, well lived-in reception area: guide books and paperbacks left behind by previous visitors makes it feel like a home from home. Our expectation was for a modest traditional bedroom. As we entered our room ["Tre Scalini"] our initial impression was of a traditional room but we soon realised that they had created a fantastic combination of traditional features [timber ceiling, wooden window shutters] with mod cons [flat screen TV, designer lamps]. The walk-in wardrobe lit up as you opened it and there was a useful safe. The biggest surprise and treat was the bathroom complete with jacuzzi, walk-in shower [more like a wet room with sprays and waterfalls and LED light show] and TV!
Breakfast was a simple but delicious affair - you must try Silvie's pastries and apple pie.
Parking [15 euros a day] is just around the corner.
TIP: use Google street view to get shots of the hotel exterior and the approaches to it. It really did help to find the hotel.

Room Tip: Our room was called Tre Scalini
