“Wonderful find in Lucca”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

We decided to transfer to Lucca at the last minute and pulled our our trusted
Rick Steves Italy guide to find a hotel. He listed La Luna and I called to make a reservation for two rooms for the next night. Sarah answered (as Rick said she would) and was very gracious, reserving the rooms for a very discounted rate and breakfast the next day. When we arrived in Lucca the next day and saw the narrow medieval streets, we wondered if it was safe to drive in, so we walked in to visit with the Information office first. They assured us we could drive to La Luna (enter the walls, turn right then left - you will see it there!). HA! The instructions were so simple, yet so difficult. We were asking directions every 400 feet!
And the streets were so narrow and difficult to navigate! Yikes! But we made it and thank goodness, they had a garage for parking and took the keys from us at the reception desk. When we began the walk up the narrow, tight stairway to our second floor rooms we were a bit apprehensive, but once we got to our rooms - they were spacious, clean and well equipped. Thank goodness! Breakfast was standard, but certainly adequate. Sarah, Isabella and Paul were wonderful staff members (and members of the family that owns the hotel - Sarah is the owners daughter, Isabella his sister), talking with us and providing wonderful complimentary wine in the evening as we sat in their lobby and played cards. They told us stories of their Christmas celebrations (we stayed December 12), and shared about the traditions and customs of the area. Paul was so sweet the next morning as we checked out, helping to load our car and kissing us ladies on the cheeks with a flourish and a "Buon Natale!". It was just the right place to stay for the night in Lucca - so glad we found it and made the reservation!

“Pretty cool hotel in the middle of Lucca!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

Folks, this is quite neat. Not only the location, but the hotel as well. Lucca is one of these towns with all the city walls still intact. So, first, you need to break the law. This means, you will drive right into the pedestrian zone (no kidding), the authorities will take a photo of your car and then you better hurry to the hotel to get your fine cancelled. I kid you not. The municipality will take photos of any car entering the city center and if you do nothing about it you will get a fine. But we got it cancelled, of course. So, first you drive right trough all the tourists into the no car zone, having them glare at you and calling you names in a city with streets so narrow you wanna cry. Once you arrive at the hotel (do not miss it or else...), you will be guided up a stuffy, smelly stairway (oh my god, where am I...) into a room and - tattaaa - all of a sudden you find space, frescoes on the ceiling, a medieval feeling to the whole place.

We were extremely surprised by the room, but this was rather cool. A hotel employee then told me that this building is an old Locanda (an inn in olden times...).

The room itself was very quiet, roomy, complete with a large bathroom and television. The breakfast in the morning is standard. At best.

What happened to the car? No worries, once you are registered you can get in an out of town with no fear for a fine. And they have private parking ... at an extra cost.

In short, if you are looking for a place to stay in the middle of town (and mind you, you will have to find your way in and out again...), then this is the place. We will stay there again, if ever we go back.

Room Tip: If you need a family room, ask for it! You will get a very quiet huge room, complete with frescoes o...

“Very disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

First prblem - the room reeked of igarette smoke despite being non smoking. Secondly front desk staff were not interested in fixing the problem - in fact their attitude was casual in the extreme. This is not a particularly cheap hotel but there is mould in the bathroom a dark and dpressing stairwell a pretty dark and depressing room and the TV would not work for us.

Breakfast however was good and the people serving breakfast were friendly and helpful.

All in all our most disappointing hotel in 8 weeks and 20 stops over Europe.

“Our home from home.”

We stayed for a long weekend in mid-October. A perfect break with lucky brilliant weather. This was our sixth or seventh visit to La Luna. It's a family owned and run small hotel with arguably THE best location in this sensational jewell of a medaevil city. As it was my 65th birthday, I booked the best room in the place. Well worth it, with a sensational ceiling fresco and soooo spacious. We'll be back!

“Perfectly Located within the old city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2011

A nice hotel located within the walls of the old city of Lucca. Our room was spacious, comfortable, clean, and we actually had a bath tub. Wi-Fi was available for a 3 Euro charge. He staff was very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was excellent. My wife and I felt very safe wandering around the area the hotel was in after dark.

Room Tip: Hotel was part of our Rick Steves tour and it's in his tour guide
