We stayed at the Aurora 25-26 Sept, 2006 and loved it. Through pure luck, we had room #31 with a small balcony and the most breathtaking view of Florence you can imagine. Absolutely unobstructed view of the entire city from horizon to horizon- it was so stunning, we bought pizza our second evening there so we could sit on the balcony and watch the sun go down!
Although pricey, the rooms are clean and nicely furnished with antiques. Look for the plaque on the sun patio that says Queen Victoria stayed there in 1893.
The staff were great, ask for Sally at the front desk, she's from the U.S. but speaks good Italian and was extremely helpful in giving directions, helping us book our next hotel etc. A great lady.
The hotel is on the main square across from restaurants, the cathedral and the Roman ruins. The square is under construction, so watch for barriers and construction equipment. There's an Enotecca (wine shop) just up the street which has a good selection of local wines at reasonable prices.
If you're driving, Fiesole is not easy to get to- the streets aren't well marked and some of the hills are really steep and narrow. We highly recommend renting a car with a GPS/navigation system if you're going to travel in Tuscany- it's worth it!
