We spent a week in the Gemma which is a double deluxe room, directly overlooking the square. It is a large, well appointed room with free wi-fi and an equally large bathroom. This was our first trip to Florence and we could not have chosen a better place, or location to stay, being right in the heart of the historic centre. There is far too much to see and do in one week, so we chose carefully and will hopefully go back again. Being out of season we did not have to book prior to going anywhere, nor did we queue. There was a public holiday while we were there and we got a taste of what the queues might be like in season. If you are a pensioner be sure to ask if there are entrance discounts, some are completely free, except that is, for the churches and the Duomo! We could not fault the staff at La Casa, they were all very friendly and breakfast was excellent. Although firm, we did not find the bed uncomfortable. Our only concern was that some nights when the Pub next door turned out at two and three in the morning, the patrons were very noisy, choosing to loiter while laughing and shouting. It was the only down side of this lovely location. You could of course opt for a room off the square, but then you will forgo the interesting daytime vista. The police could have done more by moving them on, but they didn't seem to be much in evidence, or even concerned. It was not a show stopper for us, just an annoyance. We ate a lot on the south side of the river, we found it cheaper, better quality and less crowded than the main centre. One such is Trattoria da Ginone (they are reviewed here), great food, great value, nice people, but be sure to book in advance.
