We stayed in the Hotel Victoria five nights. The room was clean and not a bad size. The staff was very friendly.
The location is convenient, just a few minutes walk from the train station at Santa Maria Novella (tip: Florence has more than one train station. Make sure you get off at the right one.) The hotel is on Via Nazionale, which can be tricky to find at first because it does not go all the way down to the station square. Go across from the station to Largo Fratelli Alinari. That turns into Via Nazionale. Florence is compact so you can walk most anywhere from the hotel.
The breakfast room is pleasant and very clean, and the breakfast is OK (breads, cheese, cereals, “juice,” excellent coffee, etc.), but it would be nice to have had some ham or other meats.
There is a very good restaurant around the corner on Via Faenza: the Trattoria Nerone. They specialize in excellent thin crust wood fired pizza, but everything we tried there was good. For example, I am very fussy about my squid, and theirs was a rare treat: done perfectly. The staff is great and very helpful in identifying what you might like to order. They treat you very well, and if you are a returning customer they treat you royally.
We encountered two problems with the Hotel Victoria. The first was the bed, which was two twins put together. It was not all that bad, but they should rotate the mattresses every now and then because they slope down from the middle.
The second problem was the noise. The hotel caters to school trips. We had two different groups on our floor during our stay. Both were very considerate and quiet when they realized others were staying on the same floor. However, the floors are tiled and the ceilings are high, so sound is amplified. There is no way thirty high school students can enter or leave en masse without making lots of noise. The timing is predictable, centering mostly on meal times. If you want to sleep late or go to bed early, this timing does not work.
Would we go there again? Yes, if we could be ensured that there would be no school groups on our floor.
