“We loved this hotel so much we returned...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2011

We stayed in this hotel 2 years ago and had a lovely stay, this year we had planned to stay in a different hotel but it fell through and after looking around we decided to come back here. I'm so glad that we did. We stayed in 2 rooms (travelled with daughter) from 29th July to 3rd August 2011.
Firstly, the owner and staff are friendly, polite and helpful, in particular the young lady on reception speaks excellent English and is without fail extremely helpful, it shames me to admit that I don't know her name (being English I felt it would be rude to ask - I know silly of me).
Secondly, the rooms are spacious, beautifully furnished and exceptionally clean. I believe that all rooms come with ensuite facilities and I find that there is plenty of room.
Finally, breakfast... there is a good selection of various breakfast items (typical European style, which I love) including fruit juice and cereal for the less adventurous.
We plan to return to Firenze (Florence) in 2 years time and I will use this hotel again (if I can get a room).

“A gem of a hotel with lovely staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 July 2011

I stayed alone for two nights here. The staff were very friendly and extremely helpful despite the fact that I could not speak Italian - they were good enough to speak English tome thank you. The room was clean, and had lovely veranda overlooking the courtyard. The breakfast was plentiful and with a lot of choice - it was so refreshing to come to a hotel that still retained its own unique style and resisted the blandness of modern and corporate hotels.
I would thoroughly recommend this hotel - it was a lovely friendly comfortable and safe place to stay.

“Oh my god!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 May 2011

I've never seen such a dirty and poor place. The staff was rude with me and they give me the worst room of all the hotel (#21). The traffic's sound was so loud I couldn't sleep and it was not possible to close the windows completely. The toilette was at the same place that the shower it floads the room. I will NEVER come back!

“Affordable stay for culture travelers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2010

I was visiting Florence in July for the culture. My stay at the Il Granduca was a week long in the twin room with shower. Located on a walking distance from the city center and separated by one busy street, the location was good not being either too close or far enough.

The staff at the hotel was polite and kind. Communication with the staff worked in English, even though some only spoke limited English.

The room was clean and generally good. The air condition worked great, but the beds were cheap. The hotel was quiet at the time of my stay, but the few times there was noise, it would come straight through to the room. While the water supply in the shower did not match the standard in Scandinavia, I found it to be quite good compared to other showers I've experienced in Southern Europe. Some minor details could be improved (e.g. angle of the sink so that objects don't fall in), but overall the room was good.

The breakfast was somewhat simple, but reasonable and good enough to get you going. The table on which it was served however was shaky and felt totally impractical with lowest layers of the table about at knee level.

The wireless Internet connection in the hotel was with an extra fee starting from 2 euros for 20 minutes. You would buy a card with the username and password, which would be registered in your name. The signal would not reach my room and the only way to use it was from the lobby. From there the connection worked.

+ Location
+ Price (paid about 50 EUR/nigh for twin room with discount)
+ Air conditioning!

- The table on which breakfast was served
- Wireless did not reach the room (and was with a fee)

“Darling Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 July 2010

The only strange thing for me was the small bathroom and the shower that wasn't separated, which means the floor had to be wiped up after a shower. Other than that (I've traveled to the Philippines, so this is minor), I enjoyed our stay there. The room was clean, comfortable and cute with "shabby chic", vintage furnishings and an air conditioner (it was a bit hot when we were there). But what I most liked about this place was the service. The staff could speak English, which was very helpful for us Americans new to Florence (we were in Rome beforehand, and didn't hear much English at our last hotel), and they really took care of us. There was a handsome, older man who either was the manager or the owner who looked like he was an actor back in the day, who was always there, making us breakfast, sometimes at the front desk, and making sure we were able to get in if we were out late. He was terrific. I only wish we stayed there longer. We would definitely stay there again.
