“Good value and location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We're in our upper 20's and didn't want to spend a fortune on hotels while in Florence. Hotel Merlini was an excellent find. It is a 5 minute walk from the train station and within walking distance of many attractions. The hotel is very clean and the rooms are bigger than most we stayed in on our trip. The family owners only speak a little bit of English, but are VERY friendly and will help you however they can.

If you are picky, then beware of the following things. You will have carry your luggage up 3 flights of stairs to get to the hotel. You may hear minimal noise in the hallways and from the water in the pipes. There are no room keys, so you have to ring the bell to be let in any time you leave. This also means there is a curfew at night, which I think was 1am. None of these things were a problem for us. There is an extra charge for breakfast, but there are plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby which I would suggest going to unless you prefer the convenience of eating at the hotel.

If you want reasonable accommodations at a good price, then I strongly recommend Hotel Merlini.

“Excellent value and service, great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

My son and I really enjoyed our recent stay at Hotel Merlini. The rooms have a lovely character and charm, the family who run the hotel are very helpful and friendly, especially Rosario who doesn't hesitate in carrying your luggage up the stairs and makes a great coffee for you at breakfast! The location is wonderful, being a quick walk to the railway station and only a few minutes to Il Duomo. There are many cafes and restaurants closeby the hotel. The value for money was excellent and I will certainly stay again on future trips to Florence.

“Family Hotel with an eye for customer service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

The Hotel Merlini is located close to the train station in Florence. It is located at the top of a four flight staircase and at the top of my list of good, value-based accommodations. They have clean, comfortable rooms and a nice continental breakfast. The real gem here however are Rosario and Gabriela and the other family members that own and operate this hotel. They go out of the way to help and provide services like free luggage storage after check out and will help tourists with museum and sight- seeing questions. Highly recommended.

“Charming, Family-owned”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

My most recent stay at Merlini once again proved the value of staying at a small family-run place. Located in the heart of Florence, the beauty of the breakfast room overlooking the Medici Chapels and Duomo takes your breath away!
The family is kind, helpful, and accommodating. You will feel like a traveler at the turn of the century with the exceptional attentions of the hosts, and the family feeling and quaint little bedrooms. I love smelling the basil as the family cooks their dinner in the kitchen where they spend much of their time, watching television and going about the business of living their lives.
Close to everything, three minutes from the train station, and cafes and gelato a step or two away...cannot beat the charm of this old friendly, historic place!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the Duomo side of the building are best!

“Great location, but the smoking killed it for us...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

Loved the location of this hotel, very close to everything. Room was nice and the owners were great and super friendly. Breakfast room was also great and breakfast was tasty. You do have to go up 4 flights of stairs to get here, so its quite the work out with luggage but we didn't mind. However, this hotel was marked as non smoking, but what that really meant is that you cannot smoke but the owners can. They smoked in a room right near the lobby all day and it stunk and made us both get sinus infections as we are both sensitive to smoke. This hotel should not be marked non smoking since they smoke all day there. They had the windows open in our hotel room after they cleaned it every day and they had tons of air fresheners all over the hotel in the hallways and lobby trying to cover up the smell, but we still smelled the smoke and it really bugged our sinuses. It also seemed to get into our room. Would not recommend staying here if you do not like smoking and are sensitive to smoke like we are. Other then the smoke, the hotel would be great and a good value.
