We stayed here for our one night in Florence in May of 2011.
The accommodations are basic but clean, comfortable, in a good location and we only paid 62 euro per night for the two of us. Best of all, the revenues raised go to support this worthwhile charity.
This place does have a bit of a ‘school dorm’ feel about it but we found it to be very clean and quiet and we could come and go, day or night, as we pleased. Our room was clean and we had two comfortable single beds and our own bathroom.
It was a 20 minute walk from the train station, less than a five minute walk to the Arno and about a 15 minute walk to the Duomo, San Lorenzo market, etc. Five minutes away was a small piazza (same side of Arno, about half way to the Ponte Vechio) that was very interesting to hang out in in at day or night.
The one thing that was disappointing was the breakfast. However, it is optional at 5 euro per person so you can certainly take a pass on it. Also, there are certian times when you can or cant check in, which was not an issue for us as we knew about it ahead of time.
I would definitely recommend this place to my family and friends provided they are not looking for anything fancy. The price really is unbeatable for almost any place, let alone a touristy place like Florence.
Noticed that Tripadvisor didn't have their website listed when I wrote this so here it is. www.istitutogould.it
