Stella Mary is a good low cost accommodation near the old city of Florence. The street is quiet and all the touristic spots are 5-10 minutes walk away.
The rooms are clean and the breakfast was great. The employees are very friendly and they are trying to help you with anything you need. Moreover, they propose a valet-parking solution for your car, because parking a car in the historical center of Florence is mission impossible.

If your coming into Firenze SMN rail you can't get a more convenient located hotel.There is a supermarket in the same block around the corner. The hotel was clean, staff at desk accomodating with us arriving earlier. 1 bed was too soft but other two were good. Not sure if air con was working or not working to full capacity.
Don't think the continental breakfast was worth the money charged. Had expected some fruit salad but full apples only in that respect.
A kettle to make a cup of tea or coffee should be mandatory in all hotels I think. Just another way to make a euro. Can't see that you can feel at home if you have to request the staff at front desk to make you a cuppa!!! The cost for WiFii was exorbinant as well. 2 Euros for 20 minutes use. Would use again only for short stop over and not bother with breakfast. We got a hop on and hop off ticket which was valid for 48 hours and the guide told us for their company we could use in Rome as well as long as it was within the time frame. 2 routes to take either city or the hills and they operated up till 11pm while we were there. The late afternoon and evening were lovely when it cooled down a bit.

I have stayed at the Stella Mary before-it's easy location close to the train station is a plus and the rooms are decent enough.
We booked a night ( unknowingly during Fashion Week), arrived and were informed they had no rooms! We paid and booked through Bookings.com. They were very apologetic and paid for a taxi to another hotel a few streets away. The hotel was horrible-far less in comfort value than Hotel Stella. We complained to Stella Mary and they offered us 50% off our next stay....I don't think so. So after some discussion she offered us 35 euro back for 2 rooms. My friend said yes. We were tired and worn out.
After we went out for dinner we saw another guest arriving at the other hotel-same thing happened to him.
Be aware of this practice with this hotel.

Stella Mary wasn't our primary accommodation and we ended up there just for one night as the other hotel had no room vacancies for our last day in Florence. Our short stay was nonetheless pleasant.

The hotel occupies the second floor of a typical Italian 'palazzo' (a residential block), having just eight rooms. You can go up to the second floor in a traditional elevator enclosed in a wrought iron case. It is sturdy enough and safe, but some might feel uncomfortable using it (well, there's always the staircase.) The room itself was spacious, and although its en suite bathroom could do with some minor maintenance here and there if I were to be finicky, the room was charming with a very comfortable, clean bed.

The receptionists were really nice and helpful (they kindly offered to look up train schedules for us when we were in a hurry, even though the station is a short walking distance away) and the breakfast was surprisingly very good. Don't be fooled by the small breakfast room—it may not fit all the residents at one go, but the choice is varied, the service extremely efficient, and the quality good.

It is my impression that this hotel might be better suited for families with young children or slightly older couples. We are in our early 20s and felt a bit uneasy returning to the hotel at 12.30am, seeing that we were the only ones still out at that time and knowing that the sole receptionist on shift was waiting just for us to return before probably locking the door to the hotel. (That said, there was absolutely no pressure at all by the receptionist about this.) Younger adults might prefer a bigger, less personal hotel which lacks this 'family house' aspect.

Although Hotel Stella Mary wouldn't be my primary choice if I were to return to Florence, I have no real qualms about it. I still think it is a very decent 2-star hotel at a very convenient location. Give it a try—its qualities might be just what you're looking for after all.
