This hotel’s location cannot be beat – walk out the front door and you can see the Duomo about two blocks down one direction and the Accademia is a few blocks in the other direction. A very reasonable restaurant is just a few blocks down the street. There is a rooftop restaurant that has great Duomo views. We paid about $150/night for a room that sleeps four – an unbelievable deal for the location. We have had problems finding rooms that sleep four when travelling in Europe before.
Some rooms have a private terrace, some open into a small courtyard. The four man rooms could definitely use a little more closet space – four of us had to share a single wardrobe. Each had a different layout – my sister’s room had four single beds lined up like the something from Snow White and Seven Dwarves. We had a queen and single on one side and a single in a small alcove on the other side of a half wall. Bathroom layouts differ too – our shower was on the small side, shaped like one quarter of a circle – hard for my husband and 15-year old son to fit. The shower in my sister’s room was more spacious. From previous reviews, we were warned about the traditional Italian towels (they are really more like table linens). The advantage is that they dry really fast. The disadvantage they just don’t measure up to the fluffy towels we Americans have become accustomed to in most four star hotels. The rooms are pretty simple – tile floors, plain linens. We had a small refrigerator that came in handy.
PARK NEXT DOOR (in Michelangelo's Garage, I'm sure he really parked there) if you have a car! Even though it costs 23 Euro/night. We moved the cars after the first night to what we thought was a cheaper garage about one kilometer away. We ended up saving only 2 Euro a night. If you move your car somewhere else, you have to fight traffic and pedestrians through narrow streets and there is no room to park to load your luggage. It was a nightmare. Better yet, don't drive in Florence at all - take the train. The car was our biggest mistake.
Front desk was helpful in securing reservations to the Uffizi the same day.
Buffet breakfast was OK – rolls, croissants, bread, yogurt, cereal and fruit. Eggs are an extra $5 Euro. While I would not consider this a four star hotel, even by European standards, we did not pay even close to four star prices, so it’s hard to complain.
