My husband and I just spent a week in Italy (Rome and Florence) for our 10th wedding anniversary - we were actually in Florence for the three days before Christmas and left late on Christmas day. We had a "Jr. Suite" choosing to pay a bit more for a larger room, but skip the breakfast included option (we ate in the hotel once and other days popped into little cafes for cappucino and pastry). Compared to a similarly rated hotel in Rome, this was a much better deal - good value for money.
Our room was lovely: clean, spacious, nice big marble bathroom with jacuzzi tub which helped after walking around all day! Comfortable bed, and quiet, so we both slept soundly at night. The staff were most helpful with booking museum tickets and restaurants - very friendly and pleasant. It was fairly empty this time of year, so it almost felt like we had a private villa to ourselves! The lobby / bar area was nicely decorated for the holidays, and a lovely place to hang out and have a cocktail in the evening.
As noted in other reviews, the hotel is about a 10-15 minute walk from the center of town, which we didn't mind as we're avid walkers and needed the exercise to offset all the amazing food we ate while in Italy. We ate dinner in the restaurant one night, and while good, isn't anything to rave about (it's probably better in warm season as it looks onto the garden, which in Winter was fairly cold). There's a lovely trattoria (Armando) around the corner which came recommended by a foodie friend, and plenty of other good restaurants in Florence. Our best meals were lunches at Olio and Convivium and Verazzano - both in Lonely Planet.
Room Tip: If you want space, pay a bit extra for the Jr. Suite - we were on a quiet side street, second floor

Dear Heathermgrant,
Thank you very much for sharing your positive experience on this website. I’m very glad that you had a very pleasant experience with us and that you appreciated the value for money of the accommodation provided.
Christmas season is usually very quite and I agree with you that guests can really feel like being in a private villa; it is at the same time one of the best period to visit Florence because the city is not crowded at all, but very well decorated and lighted as our hotel.
As you mentioned, steps from our gate you can find plenty of cafeteria, restaurants and trattoria which usually offers better products than some popular spot next to the main monuments. At our restaurant you can find a different kind of cuisine (compared to local trattoria) using more refined combination of flavours and top quality ingredients; at the same time prices are very competitive.
I hope you will be able to come back to our beautiful city and we all remain at your disposal for any kind of assistance you should need to plan you vacation in advance.
Best wishes for a successful 2012
