I have written many reviews on Tripadvisor, and I greeted the recent controversy surrounding hoteliers complaints about authenticity with scorn and derision. Unfortunately, during my recent extended holiday in Europe, I have come to doubt the veracity of several of these reports, insofar as both the physical assets and the subjective experiences I have encountered diverge so significantly from the glowing accolades written about some hotels that I have reached the conclusion that they are not only misguided, but wholly misleading and perhaps even bogus.
Such is the case with the Goldoni; it is NOT close to the railway station - which is easily half a mile away. There is NO parking - you cannot stop in the busy street outside or you will be towed away in minutes. The main tourist attractions are 20 minutes away on foot; the local streets are busy and although apparently safe, are not welcoming after dark.
Personally, we found the staff to be grumpy and wholly unhelpful; as a trivial example, in order to re-enter the corridor to the rooms opposite the Reception area, you need to be "buzzed in" - your key will not help you gain entry. After discovering that the wifi was not free, I went to Reception to buy a card, and after 5 minutes an extremely irate gentleman emerged with a napkin around his neck and grudgingly gave me one (at undisclosed cost). I then couldn't get back into the corridor, so had to go back and ask his assistance, whereupon he swore at me. Similarly, when we first arrived we were kept circling the hotel for 35 minutes in our rental car until the €24 per day parking attendant deigned to turn up - having initially been told by reception that he was "2 minutes away".
There is NO free wifi. Other contributors have noted that there appears to be no airconditioning, with a dial setting of 5°C still generating temperatures of 30°C - unfortunately, I can confirm that the opposite is true, and that in the depths of Winter there is NO HEATING, with a dial setting if 30 producing room temperatures close to 5. The room was old, shabby and VERY DARK; only tge shaver socket in the bathroom is standard Euro-size, such that none of the electrical outlets in the room itself would accept our standard adaptor which has worked everywhere else in Europe (including Italy). Ironically, as I write, we are experiencing a power cut (5.30pm in 27th December). THIS IS SUB-THIRD-WORLD STANDARD. ( I have in the last 30 seconds discovered that the power cut was in fact "an accident" and the supply now been restored)
The hotel is relatively inexpensive; it is relatively central; it is relatively poor quality. But the glowing reviews you may read elsewhere on Tripadvisor are -in my experience - ABSOLUTELY misleading. It is impossible to recommend this hotel - try the Dante on the other side of town.
Room Tip: Courtyard - dark and dingy; roadside - noisy! Take your pick.
