“Weasels!”

The train tracks run right by the hotel, just a few feet away, and the trains are frequent. From some of the windows of the hotel you could almost give the passengers on the train high fives as they pass by. Check out the attached Google Earth image. The hotel's photos don't reveal this. The highway is not much farther away either. So much for the advertised "place of tranquility".

They say that the cable car to Taormina is just 1 km from the hotel. This is true, but they don't tell you that the walk is along a narrow winding highway with fast moving traffic and no sidewalk. The "beach" at the hotel is small pebbles, not sand.

We reserved a room at a pre-paid rate of 90 euros per night and received a "guaranteed confirmation" from booking.com. If we had not pre-paid the room the rate would have been 120 euros per night.

When we arrived at the hotel we were informed that our reservation had been canceled because my credit card had been refused. The hotel had a room available for us, however, and was willing to "do us a favor" by letting us have it for only 120 euros. When I pointed out that this was the normal non-prepaid rate the manager got very upset that we didn't trust him, began shouting, and called us uneducated.

We went elsewhere and I later contacted my bank. They said that no credit card charge had ever been submitted by Hotel Lido Mediterranee or booking.com.

When I was at the hotel and was told that there had been a problem with my credit card I offered to use my computer to to online to get information to try to clear up the matter. The hotel staff said that they had wireless internet available, but I couldn't use it unless I first paid for the room. (And according to booking.com even after you pay for the room you have to pay an additional fee to use it.) I asked them for a copy of the cancellation notice and of the slip indicating that the credit card had been rejected. They refused to give me either one.

Booking.com said this was a contract between me and the hotel and refused to get involved.

When we originally made our reservation we searched several dates for this hotel. No matter what date we searched for on booking.com the result came back with the same "hurry, only 1 room left!" message. This includes the search we did on the date of our reservation immediately after we reserved the supposed "one room left".

“Perfect location, great beach, impeccable service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2010

The hotel is fantastic. It stands right on the beach, the service is impeccable yet unobtrusive, breakfast is superb, and it's a walking distance to the cable car that takes you to downtown Taormina.

The rooms were furnished in the 70s or so, but this just adds to the charm... They are spacious, with very tall ceilings and kept clean by polite and efficient staff. Waking up to the sound of the wave breaking on the shore is fantastic...

The big advantage of this hotel that it has its own beach (with towel service). Because beach space is very limited in Taormina, many other hotels don't have direct access to the beach and shuttle their guests to the beach. Staying at this hotel you'll reach the beach from your room in 1.5 minutes by elevator ! This is unbeatable if your goal is to spend as much time as possible at the beach and swimming in the clear blue waters of Ionic sea rather than in transit...

Being close to the cable car is another great advantage - you can go and partake in the dining, shopping, sightseeing, or nightlife downtown Taormina any time.

Breakfast is fantastic and served on the terrace facing the sea - amazing! There are dinner options as well.

Staff get to know guests very quickly and are very attentive. ( We left our beach bag at the beach and went to Taormina for the night. When we got back to our room, the bag was there... )

“Amazing location; great staff; fantastic breakfast; the best beach club in Sicily next door!”

Lido Mediterranee Hotel is a fantastic option if you are planning to stay in Taormina. The hotel was obviously fitted out in the 70's and although older in style, the rooms are large, face the ocean and have lovely, large windows / balconies which you can leave open and allow the gentle sound of the ocean in through.

Th breakfast was seriously the best we had on out trip, the staff were so, so helpful and the beach, well the beach was absolutely indredible. The lovely terrace of the hotel is covered in hydrangeas and makes for a very relaxing beautiful stay.

Next door is the Caravella Beach Club where Andre, Simon and Valentina will make you feel welcome all summer long with drinks and great food too!

You can walk about 900 metres to the funicular and take it up into the main town of Taormina or you can get Alex or one of the many local fishermen to take you for a ride around the coastline and see the various grottos and beaches whilst also getting some of the history of the area.

Lido Mediterranee Hotel is a fantastic option for staying on the coast in Sicily.

“Best possible place to be on the Sicilian coast”

This hotel has a very peaceful and quiet character and I hope it will be well preserved for future. The manager Guiseppe is very efficient and was very helpfull during our entire stay.
The rooms are all with the unbelievable sea view, clean and with air conditioning. The beach is beneath the hotel- no roads to cross, no streets to pass. The beach is very lovely-sandy with all the facilities. The service at the beach is very accurate and efficient.
Breakfast is rich and with fresh products. The hotel has a parking and it is very important in Taormina surroundings-a must to have a car- many nice places to eat and go out around the place.
I would recommend to change the matrasses - the sleeping experience could be less painfull to your back then.
It would be nice to have some piano evenings in the piano bar- it was resting .during our stay.
Definately will try to come next year and recommend to my friends this hotel.

“More than satisfactory”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2010

I agree with the older reviews of the hotel - yes, it is in a need of a refurbishment. However, the hotel is really nice and has its atmosphere. All rooms are toowards the sea, so you so to sleep and hear the waves. Also, the breakfast is served on a terrace a few metres away from the sea. We loved it. There is enough food for everyone - eggs, bacon, fruits, sweets, etc. I only missed vegetables. The beach is fine, with plenty of sunbeds. You will also get a fresh towel for your sunbed every morning.
