The hotel is indeed "quaint" and "charming" - rather old-fashioned, but excellent service, very clean and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Although its website does mention it's only 900m to the cable car to go up into the town of Taormina, it omits to tell you that the walk is along a very winding, badly lit road with no pavement - we ended up christening it "The Walk of Death". Most of the guests seemed to have hired cars - we toyed with the idea but decided against it. We ate in Taormina on most evenings, but did have a couple of dinners in the hotel itself (not particular brilliant food for the price, and frozen veg to boot!). I think some of the other guests had opted for half-board or even full board, the restaurant was open at lunchtime and in the evening, but just for hotel patrons. The hotel seemed almost like the Marie Celeste at night, either everyone had gone to bed early, or they had gone out elsewhere. A mention was made on Trip Advisor about the frequency and noise of the local trains - indeed they are in evidence but not too invasive. The hotel is right on the beach, and it is a lovely private beach too, very clean and situated in a beautiful bay. There is a local beach bar next door, only open during the day, but with very friendly staff.
I must add, the area around the hotel is just not what I had expected of a resort, hardly any shops except for the odd pharmacy or grocer, and most of the cafes/restaurants are linked with hotels - really the only place to get a half-decent meal is in Taormina itself, which is situated up on the cliff, high above the beach of Taormina-Mare. A taxi ride from the hotel to Taormina would cost about 15-20 euros each way. We used the cable car, which was 3.50 euros return.
