We arrived at 8:30pm, in the pouring rain, with no reservation. It was my birthday. We had had a long day touring and been through bad traffic so were late getting to Siracusa. My husband sent me in to beg for a room. I was tired and wet and must have looked a fright. I mentioned to the receptionist it was my birthday and she became an angel in the midst of my despair. She looked at my passport to confirm and suddenly everyone swung into action.
We were upgraded to a Junior Suite through AMEX, Platinum. The hotel staff was stellar. Our room was more than ample, high ceilings, clean and fabulous tile in the bath. The windows and view were spectacular.
While dressing for dinner, I saw what can only be described as a ghost in my room. I am an educated, rational woman and well traveled. I have never seen a ghost before or since. This was an extremely clear, long lasting and overall pleasant experience. Not threatening in the least.
A few minutes later, the staff delivered complimentary champagne to the room for my birthday - what a unexpected treat! Additionally, they held the rooftop restaurant - glass enclosed - located right on the very tip of Siracusa - OPEN so we could eat a five star meal. This kind of service is unheard of today.
While dining, an incredibly severe storm hit the coast. It felt like a hurricane and I am from New Orleans. For two hours, the rain and the wind swirled all around us while doors banged and the palms fell outside on the terrace. Inside, warm and cozy, the piano man gently kept playing. The wait staff was reserved, generous, very well schooled and worthy of any premium establishment in the world. It was an exquisite dining experience.
The architecture and the mosaics in this hotel are museum quality. Our company has sold luxury natural stone for 20 years and the mosaics in this hotel made me jealous.
This hotel enjoys THE premier location in Siracusa and is directly on the southernmost tip to the sea. If you could look far enough, you would see Malta.
Room Tip: Upgrade to a Junior Suite.
