With just a couple of posts on the web from European travellers, we booked the Palazzo Filangeri in the historic center of Palermo, a b+b that is a short walk to the Statione Centrale.
Berta and Luigi Mendola were the most welcoming and acommodating hosts, who have painstakingly restored their top floor b+b in a historical building on 92 via Maqueda. From their great door on the Via Maqueda, you enter a courtyard then to the gated doorway to the building inside on the right. 95 steps later, on the top floor you will come to the b+b!
The place is very clean, spacious and with a tastefully done bathroom with by far the largest bath tub we encountered on this trip! With a most comfortable bed (and a light breakfast!).
We only had a night and a day in Palermo, Palazzo Filangeri's location to the train station was crucial but not too near as to be in a dodgy area. It is also a short walk to the Quattro Canti, many of the monuments and the vucirria.
We were very glad to have stayed at the Palazzo Filangeri with Berta and Luigi. With not much here on the web, this place has not been discovered by Americans...also, it is not for the faint of heart or with one travelling with heavy luggage as it is on the top floor with a grand staircase which will not be appreciated on the climb! That said, we found it to be a very nice place for our short stay.
