“only there because of alitalia”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

after being at the excelsior hilton for our one night in palermo, our flight got cancelled and we were sent to this hotel courtesy of alitalia. at first they put us in a smoking room and with a six month infant this was not appropriate. the non smoking room was better although the hotel was quite outdated and far from the palermo sites so all we did the next morning before heading back to the airport was walk around the block. the food was average but the staff was very courteous and available. we were shocked that this was a four star hotel and would actually rate it a two or three star hotel.

Room Tip: a non smoking room is much better

“Only worth it if you get it cheap!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

Managed to get a glitch through laterooms, 19 euros per night with breakfast for the triple room instead of 249 euros per night. Bearing that in mind it was fine for the money, Italian four star is probably English 3 star. Reception lobby and restaurant decor all good. Rooms very dated and basic. All big and very clean. Shower was excellent - hot and poweful but there was lots of black stuff in the grout. Bath plug was missing a hook/handle so once in you couldn't get it out! Toilet seat was broken as wad latch on the window - kept blowing open in the middle of the night and waking me up. This hotel is adjacent to a huge fruit/veg market which opens at 3:30AM!!! the lorries beep beep beep as they reverse in so TAKE EAR PLUGS. There is no kettle in the room but there is a fridge. You can ask at the bar for a jug of how water, milk and a cup (no charge) and take it to your room.

Breakfast was fine but if you get there for the last hour they have run out of most things and they don't replace it unless you ask. There are no highchairs. DON'T HAVE DINNER HERE - shockingly expensive, about 75 euros per head. I was angry because on New Year's Day (evening) everywhere else was shut and I have to feed the children so ate here. Chidren wanted plain boiled pasta with butter - they charged us 12 Euros each for this! There is no children's menu. You have to pay 5 euros for 24 hours worth of internet but it is so slow that it is not worth it. Careful - on Italina bankk holidays and otherwise just randomly places seem to be shut whenever they feel like it - maybe this is because we went in winter! I don't just mean the 1pm to 4pm daily shut down.

There is a Supermarket 3 minutes from the hotel, come out of the hotel, cross the road and turn left - it is called Sisa Supermaercado. Before you get to the Supermarket there is a pizza place which does brilliant huge pizzas for 3 euros each, I recommend the Supercrudo one.

There is a bus stop right outside the hotel, you need the 812 or 139 to town. Crazily though you first need to go to the Tabacchi shop to buy the tickets. The ticket is valid for any travel for 90 minutes so you can hop on hop off kind of thing.

The streets are filthy and there is dog poo all over the pavements because of the stray dogs - BEWARE. The hotel is a bit out of town, we timed it as a 40 minute walk to the centre of town with the pushchair. It is really hard work pushchair wise as the kurbs are high and there is no dropped kerb. The cars park on the pavements so you have to push the pushcahair on the road all the time which is really SCARY. The road crossings are terrifying as when there is a green man people still drive very fast and you have to keep a very tight hold of children. Based on all this I don't recommend this hotel if you have small children and the journey to town unless you take the bus is very unsafe.

The hotel is in a slightly seedy area and there in nothing salubrious in the immediate area - except fo rthe pizza place and the supermarket.

This hotel may suit young people on a budget or couple on a cheap break. The reception staff were not friendly and tried to charge us for the room when we had prepaid, charge us for the minibar when we didn't use it and charge for every other bl**dy thing except hot water.

The taxi from the airport cost 50 euros. It was about a half hour journey.

I WOULD NOT RETURN TO THIS HOTEL, NOT EVEN FOR 19 EUROS a night.

Room Tip: Take earplugs and spare shoes, get staff to give you all relevant bus numbers and bus map before you...

“Being robbed at the Astoria Palace Hotel in Palermo, Italy”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

During our stay at the hotel money was taken from our room safe. An employee of the hotel, with knowledge of how to open the safe, stole $180.00.

A police report which was filed because of the incident. Our tour guide stressed to us that our belongings would be more secure in the room safe than if we carried them with us.

The hotel is responsible for the security of our belongings if they are placed in the room safe which was made available to us.

The personnel working the front desk at the time we discovered our loss showed no interest in our predicament. They refused to call the hotel manager and pointed out that the police would not be available at that moment. Our tour bus was waiting for us and the police report had to be filed in another town.

During our stay the front desk personnel were often indifferent to the needs of our group and were of no help when we discovered that we were robbed.

Room Tip: Stay at a different hotel.

“Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Nice hotel with parking and far enough from the center of Palermo. You must not stay in the center because the feeling is strange and maybe dangerous for you. Everywere you go in the night use a car...
Not renovated rooms but clean and comfortable.

“nice advert but bit mis-leading”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

not exactly a stroll in to town or well a 40 minute jog but at least the hotel has taxi's outside. the rooftop bar was great on the first night closed the second due to a wedding and on the final closed for cleaning.reception staff came across as abrupt but as in some cases there English wasn't particully helpful at least they recommended a good local resteraunt by taxi.

Room Tip: get an Italian speaking friend to help with any special requirements
