Before settling into my apartment, I reserved a room at the Hotel Garbaldi for one night. The hotel was relatively inexpensive, located in a central area of town (right across from the Piazza Politeama) and the rooms were large (especially by European standards), nicely decorated, comfortable and clean. I also found the front desk staff to be very welcoming.
In my mind, the only big drawback was that, unless one uses the provided ethernet, the internet doesn't work. (Further, the internet isn't free - I paid five euro.) Another drawback was the view, but as I wasn't looking for a room with a view I wasn't troubled by the somewhat dismal vista.
I enjoyed the buffet breakfast, but would remind visitors that the buffet is located in two rooms, not one (if a kindly staff member hadn't pointed this out to me, I would have overlooked the second room). Also, remember to order a cappuchino (delicious!) as the coffee, as previously noted, wasn't all that great.
