“What a let-down”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2010

I believe in the old adage that if you have nothing good to say, say nothing; however our experience at this hotel prompts me to put it to paper to perhaps let other travelers avoid a similar experience. Based on favorable reviews and pleasant stays at other NH hotels, we chose this property and on arrival requested a quiet room. We were assigned room #316 and assured it would be quiet. When we opened the door to the room we found it to be a sweat-box at 82 degrees, as was the hallway outside. We turned the A/C on only to find it did not respond to the thermostat at all, however, the ground floor lobby bar/reception area was comfortably air conditioned. Upon opening the window to perhaps let some slightly cooler outside air in, we realized the room faced the busy street in front of the hotel with incessant car, motorcycle, and bus traffic, plus street cars rumbling by with lots of noise making the tight turn at the corner. Thereupon we returned to the reception where the receptionist reached under the desk as if to flick a switch, stating that our room A/C will now work. Returning to the room, we closed the windows, turned the A/C on, and left the hotel for dinner nearby. When we returned the room was no cooler than when we left, and it dawned on us that the hotel A/C system was turned off until the management at some future time decides to turn it back on.

When we made clear to the front desk that sleeping in that hot room with windows closed was not an option nor opening the windows to the street noise, we were offered to move to the near NH Royal Palace Hotel, which we did.

It should be noted the Grand Liberty exudes all the charm and ambiance of old world elegance with lots of marble and rich wood paneling. It is located near the harbor and within a short walk of a Piazza with lots of shopping and dining options. The Hotel has neither a restaurant nor a parking garage, yet street parking on a side street is a possibility. Regretfully, the eagerness of the receptionist to rent a room and then being deceptive when confronted with reality soured our experience.

“A basic hotel with a retro feel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 May 2010

The rooms are pleasant with the usual channels available on TV. Very nice bathroom, a reasonable minibar and a comfortable bed.
The hotel is connected to the internet, but only via a single computer in the lobby. There is no wireless or LAN connection in the rooms.
There's no restaurant in this hotel, and instead you a guiided to a sister hotel 5 minutes walk away. The restaurant carried on the retro feel, although I must say the food was very pleasant, and the staff very attentive.
The hotel does the job, but there aren't any frills. There's nowhere for cars to stop outside (and Sicilians are not known for their patience when driving) so booking a taxi needs planning.
It's relatively cheap and the staff very pleasant. I wouldn't recommend it for a business trip, but for a holiday it's a good, cheap option.

“Great hotel, great staff”

Our stay at the Liberty began shrouded in mystery. We were booked for 4 days, but were told that the hotel was going to be closed that weekend to fix a problem they had been having with the AC, so that was going to give us 2 days at the Liberty and 2 at the Royal Palace (see my review of that if you dare). The staff at the Liberty is excellent. We were always warmly greeted and they were responsive to any request (thanks Salvatore and the rest of the crew for taking great care of us).

The property itself is a very nice building (by Messina standards) with spacious rooms and a bit of elegance. We had a 3rd floor corner room (after asking to be moved up from a 1st floor room) that was very nice with a good view and a large bathroom. The breakfast on the top floor (grab a table outside) was a nice start to the day with a very good selection of food items. You are right by the docks and that does produce some noise, but once the windows are closed you do not hear a thing. We slept the first night with them open and it was not a problem.

By the second night the AC was working again, but they still moved everyone over to the Royal Palace due to staffing schedules. We sadly said goodbye to the Liberty. If you are going to be staying in Messina, this is the place to be.

“Paradise in comparison”

After an awful stay in in the nearby Jollys hotel we checked into this one and the differance was felt imediatly. The staff on the front desk were helpfull and even helped my girlfriend for directions to Torre Faro the nearest beach he recomended. The bedroom and bathroom was clean. Maybe even a little to clean the bright white lobby walls seamed to attract a couple mosquitos, these didnt bother me as jo was bitten instead. internet accesses was helpfull. The breakfast was vast and enjoyable on thier roof terance. The only left down was a month later when i recived a 38p credit card bill wilst fliping through the tv channels. Maybe they could make the tv billing a little clearer or for the price we payed maybe even just include it in the price. a very nice stay anyway.

  • Liked — Breakfast Choice on the rooftop.
  • Disliked — a stupid credit card bill for flicking though the tv channels

“Good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2007

The hotel is in a very convenient location. On arrival they seemed to have lost our booking, but managed to find us a room. Unfotunately, the plumbing was somewhat erratic, we got covered in water running a bath, and then the plug got jammed. Initially they were unkeen to do anything about it until morning, and needed some persuasion at the front desk.
The bed was comfortable, and breakfast on the roof terrace was good, with good service. The front desk in the morning was very helpful about our onward travel arrangements. All in all, a good hotel, but with variable (OK to good) service.

  • Liked — location and service when good
  • Disliked — plumbing and service when bad
