“Golden Era”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2011

person found this review helpful

Large room from a bygone era. 100 metres from train station. Melania & her staff were very attentive & helped us with all our enquiries. If you are going to stay in Messina this is the place to stay. Even though its not right in the centre of the town the convenience tram that runs outside the door will get you wherever you want to go. The breakfast was sumptuous & served in very pleasant surroundings. Wifi was good. They even let us use their office computer when we had some problems with ours. They ensured we had breakfast before our early checkout & suggested we purchase our train ticket the day before we left which turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

“Worst hotel ever!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2010

After reading good reports about this hotel we booked ourselves a room, we arrived quite late in the afternoon so it's location near the ferry was quite convenient. The parking was an issue, we had to initially park two blocks away and walk with our luggage to the hotel. On arrival at the reception we were greeted by a very unhelpful young woman who basically snatched my booking form and passports then threw the key at me. When I asked about the secure parking which we had requested it turned out that access to it was round the block but at least we had somewhere off the street. When we got to our room we almost turned around and walked out, the room was dark and dingy, the carpet was filthy, the walls had wall paper that was peeling off and it was smelly, the shower was mouldy. One could ask why we didn't complain - well approaching the young woman at reception was not really an option so we decided to stay put and leave first thing the following morning. We had breakfast before we left and actually dealt with a very pleasant woman who took our coffee order. On checkout we dealt with a different person on reception, an older woman who was incredibly surly, no smiles, no thank you, nothing!! When we asked her to open the garage door her reaction was incredible, anyway we got to the entrance of the garage she had not opened it so I had to go back and ask again. A thoroughly unpleasant experience at this hotel.

“faded elegance of a bygone era”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2010

Being moved to this hotel from the nearby sister NH hotel in the middle of the night and leaving early in the morning, observations are thus limited and based on a stay in a junior suite. As a gesture of apology for our troubles in the NH Liberty, we were welcomed with a basket of fruits in suite #418. The suite was more of an apartment with two bedrooms and two baths besides a living room and a writing area. It faced a relatively quiet side street, which allowed us to open the window in one room to get outside air in and use the A/C for white noise in the bedroom in which we slept. As in the NH Grand Liberty, the A/C system was turned off by the hotel until some future date. Nevertheless, the arrangement worked satisfactorily for us and we enjoyed a good night's sleep in in the comfortable king size bed. Breakfast is included in the room rate and was served buffet style with a nice selection of offerings.
The hotel is an older Property with some fading old world elegance, including lots of natural wood paneling. Some updating would be worthwhile in places. It is well located in the city across from a tree-lined square. Street parking in some side streets is a possibility, but one must purchase a pay stub at the tobacco store and display it on the dash. Parking on these streets is free after 8:30PM until 8AM.

“ok but old.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2009

good point = it's close to the train station. there is ONE very nice/helpful receptionist
breakfast is not bad, esp the scramble egg - it's very well done.

bad point = it's very old. in great need of refurbishment. it's not cheap! (cheap comparing to the others in town)
grumpy receptionists who gave wrong advice! do they have any clue about the city?

it's live-able. but wouldnt recommend it to ANYONE!
