Villa Morgana is a property that has seen its best days, and the current management seems to be facing the future largely by cutting corners. Our room, though large, had furnishings that were basic and utilitarian and a décor that was faded and outdated as though the hotel, built in the 1970s, had never been thoroughly renovated. The lighting was poor. The bathroom, also large, supplied only soap and bath gel, but no shampoo or lotion, and the shower (no tub) was a cramped 30 inches square. The TV, though flatscreen, measured only about 17 or 19 inches and offered only Italian language programming, no English or other European languages. The breakfast buffet was meatless, in the Italian style, lacking the ham and other cold cuts for international travelers offered by the other hotels at which we stayed. The hotel restaurant at night offered only 2 antipasti, 2 pasta/rice courses, and 2 main courses, for which it charged a high 15 euros per person considering the choice and the quality. Unfortunately, Villa Morgana, about 15 kilometers from the center of Messina, is located in a neighborhood devoid of restaurants and bars, shopping, entertainment, and other tourist amenities. The staff was sometimes helpful, decidedly not at other times. We acknowledge the hotel was clean, but so were the other four hotels at which we stayed. On balance, though Villa Morgana was not the cheapest hotel, we deemed that it offered the lowest value for the money we spent.
