“Price to Value not up to par”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2011

I hate to write negatives but there are some things people should be aware of. This hotel was not cheap and for what we spent I had expectations. We had full pension and a lovely room on the top floor overlooking the pool with a view of the ocean.

The positives, lovely setting, excellent staff in the dinning room, nice buffet of appetizers for lunch and dinner, small dessert buffet but great desserts, quiet if the public beach is not blaring music for exercise or whatever. The room was clean and nicely decorated. The bed was good, the balcony was wonderful although a lounge chair would be nice and the drying rack outside on the balcony was a plus. Parking is not too bad except in July and August it must be horrible. The parking lot is tiny so you have to street park and you are fighting for parking with the public beach and various private residences as well. Our room maid was wonderful.
The reception staff was for the most part good, on check in we had a very nice blond take care of us but after that the rest of the staff was a bit cold.

The negatives, the place needs maintenance! Paint is cracking off walls, it looks dirty in the public areas such as the bar. The pool is wonderful but so small for so many rooms! There were only 9 umbrellas out at the pool with umbrellas so basically it is a fight until death to get a place by the pool. The public beach is gross and not a great place for swimming particularly if it is windy. There is water around the pool area and I wonder, what the heck for? All it does is add more humidity and take space away from what could have been a great pool area. The BBQ was closed when we were there and we left the last weekend of June! These places are open 4 months out of the year and you would think they would have plenty of time to do maintenance on the off season. Ha! Not a chance. They wait to do it on your time.
Breakfast was supposed to be served until 10:30 am. We got there at 10:05 and it was closing. Hey gang, this is vacation and we have to stress to get up just to get a cup of coffee and some fruit?? The breakfast was a great spread and I am sorry I missed it but who needs to run? It would be nice if they gave you the option of having your breakfast at the bar after hours just coffee and a croissant. The lunch buffet for appetizers was always great as well as the dinner one. The problem is the kitchen could not keep up with the cooking. One day at lunch there was salmon in a chafing dish. Lunch opens at 1pm so it is a mass seating of people all at once. By 1:30 the chafing dish is empty and no one has figured it out. One waiter was in charge of that and he came back and said 10 minutes and I will bring it to you. 20 minutes later it arrives with just the fish on the plate even though there were grilled vegetables with the fish and the salmon was undercooked. So by that time, you know the music is over. You are done waiting and done getting up and down. Another evening I ordered skewers on the grill and my partner ordered risotto. The meat was raw on the skewers except for the first pieces and his rice was cold and over cooked, mushy. We never went back for a dinner even though they were paid for. We went out and found fabulous local fare as well as awesome fish and perfectly prepared. We were told they were short staffed regarding the early closure of breakfast. As for the kitchen, what can I say? It was not good. The dinning staff was perfect and they tried but you can only do so much when underneath the structure is not working.
We also had problems with our room privacy. We put the card out and the first morning at 10am we get a knock and it is the guy refiling the frigobars! He could care less about the do not disturb. Two days later, same thing and then one morning we were still in the room after 10:30 and we get a knock. I go to open the door and there is no sign hanging on our door anymore. We yelled down the hall and slammed the door. The rest is about our complaints to the direction. On the day of check out we asked if we could stay until 11am in the room, check out is at 10! So the unfriendly guy goes to ask and is told that we will be allowed to stay until 4pm when our bus arrived, this was their way of saying sorry. We also ate our last lunch there and we were somewhat wined and dined. Too bad it took someone to get angry to get a great pasta.
You definitely need to rent a car to enjoy this area and from the hotel you may walk up the hill to Castel Cervo to find a Hertz or ask the hotel and they will send you the local car rental. At Castel Cervo you will find great ice cream, coffee, restaurants and such so you are not totally isolated. At least getting out of the hotel for a good coffee helped. The coffee is terrible at the hotel bar and expensive, everything from the bar is expensive. I don't mind expensive but bad and expensive is really the pits.
