“small and personal”

we enjoyed the company of the other guests as it had a family atmosphere. At breakfast we chose our dinner menu each day and liked the italian food. The sunbeds at the pool are the best in the area as we checked all hotels nearby.Room was fine but bathroom very small and it would be best to pay for an upgrade.Big red tour bus was a good drive around the area.Hotel is an easy walk into town past the marina.Good for all ages.

Room Tip: pay extra for upgrade and balcony.

“Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2011

We really enjoyed our stay at the Riviera Hotel. The location was fantastic - 50metres from the beach or a 15 minute stroll into the old town of Alghero. We also liked Maria Pia beach a little further away. Backed by a pine forest it was beautiful and had plenty of ameneties (although the end nearest to Alghero was a bit smelly). All the local beaches were great and the sea was warm, shallow and calm which was great for a relaxing swim to cool off.

All the staff at the hotel were lovely, very friendly and helpful and the room was spottlessly clean and comfortable. The bedding and towels were changed daily. The bathroom was a bit small but adequate and there was always always plenty of hot water. Take some shower gel or soap as they do not top these up after the initial supply has been used. The balcony was also a bit on the small side but there was enough room to sit out and it gave us somewhere to dry our beachwear. Our room overlooked the restaurant opposite and this was very noisey on our first night (Saturday) but after that we had no problems with it. I think they would have moved us if we had requested it as they were very accommodating.

The evening meals were a bit hit and miss but there was a selection and it was all quite edible although the fresh fruit at breakfast and in the evening was not in very good condition. Breakfast was the usual rolls, cheese, ham, yoghurt, tinned fruit etc. and the coffee was not great. It was a bit strange being asked to sit at the same table all the time but if it helps their organisation it really didn't matter to us. The dining room was always clean and well organised. We would have prefered bed and breakfast but this wasn't an option with Thomsons.

“In dire need of a revamp.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2011

We stayed here on a Thomson half board package. The Hotel Riviera is in an excellent position close to the beach and about 25 mins walk from the old town. However the hotel itself is in need of some serious TLC.

The food was best described as acceptable but un-interesting. Breakfast was fairly standard for Italy but with no fresh coffee or fresh Juice on offer. At dinner one or two seafood dishes were excellent but the majority of the other offerings were onlypassable, rather like an Italian take on a good school dinner and served about as rapidly, 40mins for 3 courses is not a relaxed pace. A shame because there was excellent food to be had in many of the local restaurants, particularly Alguer Mia and lots of fresh local ingredients in the Wednesday market. Brussels Sprouts as a vegetable offered in Italy, in September is just wrong.

The room, whilst kept spotless by the lovely maids, was in dire need of refurbishing. The wardrobe was on its last legs, the doors not closing properly and the rest seemed to be ageing poor quality flat-pack. However the bed was comfortable. The towels were only changed twice a week - not really often enough for a 3*hotel particularly in the heat of summer. And the bathroom? Well I lost count of the number of times I hit my shin on the bidet which was just inside the door. The basin was cracked and the taps had most of the chrome polished off to show the brass. The shower was over the bath, not usually a problem, but this was a strange half bath, very high sided with a slopping, slippery bottom. Difficult to get into and you're at constant risk of falling one you are in.

Lots of things which we though were automatic in a 3* hotel in 2011 just weren't there - daily fresh towels and sheets, internet access of some kind, soap and shower gel re-stocked once opened, a safe bathroom etc.

Having said all that Filomena in the restaurant and Fabio & Luigi in the bar were wonderful and happy for us to practice our Italian. We would return to Alghero but not to the Riviera in its current state.

“relaxing stay again”

just back from this hotel , have stayed here 2 times now and each time we have found it very clean, polite staff, and great location. breakfast is the usuall , fruit ,yoguts, crossants etc.
rooms are a good size, plenty of space for clothes, bathroom is ok , however you have to step into a bath tub to your shower, which is quite high , i could see this being a problem if you're elderly,
you can hire beach towels, 5.00 for the week which is great especially when flying ryaniar there is hairdryer too at reception if you need one, location is great 1 minute to beach and a nice 15 minute stroll into the old town taxi 7.00 euro or bus 1.00 tickets can be bought at the tobaconist store. food grat value, drink ok too but as usual the fancy bars and restaurants will be much more and not always better, , go and enjoy this relaxing place you will not be dissapionted .!

Room Tip: we emailed and asked for a room facing the sea with balcony and we got it ! no extra charge

“do not stay at this hotel.........................”

A TRULY AWFUL HOTEL,Owned by an english lady who really cannot be bothered,We booked through Thomsons and cannot believe they still use this hotel.

The restaurant is a joke,no choice and we were served fish broth and noodles with brussel sprouts,we never saw a tomatoe or Italian cheese and had the most disgusting onion pizza !

The attitude of the staff was shocking,i dared to ask for some croissants and got shot down in flames.Desert consisted of ice cream, pineapple cake with marmalade on or fruit salad, this arrived as a peach and apple thrown in front of us in a bowl .

The hotel is very dated and the pool area is old, dirty and tatty.Be prepared to spend your money too as aircon is £6 a night and 2 drinks at the bar was £12.

we booked half board at £600 each through thomsons but ate out 4 nights as we were fed up in the hotel and sick of the restaurant.

The old town is lovely with plenty of reasonably priced places to eat and the beach is wonderful,By all means go to sardinia but please choose a decent hotel.

DO NOT STAY AT THE RIVIERA AS YOU WILL BE DISSAPOINTED LIKE US.

Room Tip: Please Do not stay here
