“Five Stars? More like 3.5”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

Spent a night there in October 2011. Since I stay mostly in 4 and 5 star hotels when I travel I have definite expectations when checking into a 5 star hotel and this hotel just doesn't live up to it. Reception staff is just not friendly and don't even think about showing up without a passport although to be fair, it seems to be common practice throughout Sardinia to require them when checking in. This is definitely the first 5-star hotel in my experience that doesn't have a bellman. We had to schlep all the luggage up the hill to reception from the parking lot to the room. There is no drive-by drop-off for the bags at the front door although you can get closer to the entrance by ringing for them to open the gate at the bottom of the hill and driving up to the very tiny unloading area. Even then, it's still a hike to the door. The room was adequate but not spectacular, no view. It's minor but appropriate to note that this is also the first 5 star I've been in where they were afraid you were going to steal the hangers from the closet. Yes, we had the annoying ball-head hangers to fiddle with - 3-star all they way. Town is definitely more than 10 minutes away unless you're jogging. Took us about 20-30 min as noted by others. Pool closed way too early, like 17:00, so when we went down at 18:00 it was all buttoned up and never got a chance to go in. Overall, it is a solid 3+ star hotel, just set your expectations accordingly.

Dear Sir,

We hope this email finds you well!

Probably there is an error in this publication since we do not have a door at the bottom of the hill and we do have the Door Man that helps customers upon their arrival. It is wise to remind you that the hotels in Sardinia, by the Italian law, requires Hotels to ask for a passport at the check in, without it is not possible to assign rooms to any customer...We hope you can rectify this publication

With best regards,

Hotel Carlos V

“Definately not five star, and long walk to town”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2011

We stayed here in september for one week, on arival our room wasnt ready, no offer of a complemtary room to freshen up in until ours was ready, so we had to leae our bags with recpetion and call back later. the hotel is not a short strl into town it takes about 20 to 30 minutes past the urine stench sea walls, no beach near the hotl unless you are happy to stagger down the rocks and perch amoung the broken bottels left by the night drinkers. Algehro is lovely and we had som fabulous food there, lovely cafes and bars. But do not vist Carlos V, there must be better hotels near by, we stayed when it was quiet but no upgrad, jus tuck at the rear of the hotel with no view apart fom some one else accommodation. we only at breakfast in the hotel and that was alwas cold, dreadful coffee totally stewed. I have stayed in better lower rated hotels where the staff are helpful, watch out for the towel police by the pool.

Room Tip: dont stay here

Dear Guest,

We hope this email finds you well.

Having read the numerous positive reviews on this website, we were very surprised and disappointed to receive yours. However, everybody has the right to their own opinion, but let us remind you that it is your opinion…

Firstly we would like to reiterate that the hotel is situated only 500 m. from the town centre. Therefore, it only takes 10 minutes to walk there, along one of the most scenic promenades in the town. In addition, Carlos V is situated in one of the most prestigious and panoramic areas along the Riviera del Corallo.

Secondly, we pride ourselves in our breakfast menu, as it is one of our strongest points, offering over 42 high quality, fresh products. We find it difficult to believe that you found the breakfast unsatisfactory and cold.

As for the room you stayed in, it is an attractive and spacious room with a view overlooking a splendid Mediterranean garden, complete with pond and water feature.
We gave you exactly what you had requested and paid for. The rooms with a sea view have a higher price, and unfortunately with the lower tariff that you paid, an upgrade was not possible. In addition to this, bear in mind that our high occupancy in September is similar to that of August, and it is still considered ‘high season’.

Our check in time at 14.00 and is no different to that of other hotels. If a room becomes available before this, we are more than happy to offer a room earlier, but this is not always possible, especially when the hotel is at full capacity.

Finally, it is clearly stated on our website that there is a ‘small’ beach and rocks within the vicinity of the hotel. The rocks and the beach are extremely popular with the local residents and they are regularly cleaned and well maintained. Reflecting on everything that you have written, in addition to our knowledge and experience of our hotel, we are led to believe that your review is not at all credible.

Our management is disappointed that you were not satisfied with your stay here with us. It is a pity that you did not voice your concerns during your time here with us, as we value our customers and always endeavour to provide the best possible customer service and resolve any problems or concerns as soon as possible. In the future, if you are ever not satisfied with any aspect of you stay, we recommend that you contact the duty manager immediately in order that the problem can be dealt with right away.

We remain at your disposal.

With best regards,

“Great hotel in Alghero”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

We spent 4 nights in the Carlos V in Sept 2011 at the beginning of a 10-day holiday in Sardinia. We were looking for a relaxing, luxurious start to our holiday and we found that in the Carlos V which we reached via taxi from Alghero airport in under 20 minutes. The reception area does not look like that of a 5-star hotel, but we were not disappointed with any other aspects of the hotel. Our room was spacious and much more stylish than it looks in the official photos - we had a lovely sea view even though we had not paid for one, and both the room and bathroom were well fitted out. We loved the pool and the pool area - quiet, spotlessly clean and great for sunbathing. The terrace and bar are perfect for lunch or a drink before strolling into the old town in the evening, and the staff were really excellent and totally welcoming. We didn't eat in the restaurant in the evenings as it was very quiet, but we did have lunch on a couple of days and the food was really high quality. Great breakfast buffet every morning. The lack of wi-fi was somewhat frustrating but there is internet access in the lobby.

It's not the liveliest spot in the world but it was perfect for what we are looking for and the nightly walk along the coast into Alghero town to explore the cobbled streets and eat in one of its many restaurants was one of the highlights of our holiday. Definitely recommend!

“Excellent Hotel - Fantastic staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2011

We stayed for 10 days at the end of August 2011 in an Executive Double with sea view. The room was spacious and very clean. The beds were very comfortable and sheets/towels were changed everyday. Breakfast was very good with a wide choice. The pool was very large and very well kept with plenty of choice of sunbeds. Lunch in the hotel was reasonably priced (for a 5* hotel) and very good. A couple of nights we dined at the hotel and again that was excellent with prices comparable to fine restaurants in the town. The most notable plus point for this hotel was the staff - extremely professional and very friendly. If we were to say there were any negative aspects then we would say the small tv and the lack of WIFI - very minor points. Overall excellent.
