Hotel De Rossi has the bare essentials, but was the worst hotel we’ve stayed in during our 3 months in Italy. The air-conditioned room was fairly large, with the first genuine double bed we’ve had, rather than two singles pushed together, as well as a daybed and desk. But the paint on the walls was peeling, the refrigerator didn’t work (nor did the outlet it was supposed to plug into), and there was no safe. We were quite thankful for bringing our own mosquito repellent. The tiny shower had mold on the doors and leaked all over the floor, the towels were thin and poorly-absorbent, and there were no drinking cups. Actually, it was quite dangerous since the hair-dryer outlet was grounded to the shower spigot! The woman at the front desk was nice enough, but didn’t speak a single word of English and couldn’t use slow and simple Italian that we could understand. Breakfast was truly awful, the worst we’ve had in Italy – no meats or cheeses or cereal, and they don’t clean the tables after each “shift” of diners. The hotel was, however, conveniently located, just a few blocks from the train station and an easy walk to the old city, which doesn’t have any particular charm. There was only one internet point anywhere in the city (10 minutes away, often full), and very few restaurants that we could find nearby, although the dirty streets are lined with fancy shops (Roche-Bobois, Dolce & Gabbana, etc.). For 70 euros a night, the hotel was quite reasonably priced, but in the same neighborhood you might do better with Hotel Victor (we didn’t see the rooms, but the lobby looked nice). We’ve never been so glad to leave anyplace.
