WORST EXPERIENCE OF A PLACE I HAVE EVER HAD. The exterior of the building was a little run-down when we first found it but we optimistically put it down to 'character'. Inside, the staff were moody and abrupt, again we cataloged it under 'local Italian charm' and expected the accommodation to make up for it.
But once we got to the prison-cell of a room, up a back stairs where only half the lights worked, there was little to disguise the poor quality of this establishment. The room was extremely stuffy and cramped, and the white walls were dirty with many varieties of stain. Unfortunately I had come down with a flu when we arrived so all of these things which we possibly could have overlooked had we been outside sight-seeing all day, were increasingly forced upon us as I spent some time sleeping in the room during our first afternoon in Venice.
However, these things were all small-fry when it came to the first proper night of sleeping. Our room was directly outside the mens' shower room and toilet which led to constant door-banging and noise literally all night, along with a distinct smell of urine always available just outside our door. A local bell rings every half hour all through the night which did not help matters.
The worst however was the complete infestation of mosquitos in the room. There were no wooden shutters, mosquito nets or adequate curtains on the windows. Therefore, not only did we have to bake in the heat without opening the window for fear of more mossies, we also had an all-night assault of the existing ones eating us alive. The results were huge red bites all over our arms, stomach, legs and face which I am still hounded by two days after arriving home.
Foolishly we didn't complain and stayed a second night after my boyfriend went on a mozzie-killing spree that day. However the many cracks and open sockets in the wall ensured that the room was fresh with mosquitos again come bed-time. We tried in vain to get some sleep under cover of sheets to avoid the mosquitos, but eventually gave up any hope of rest at 3 a.m. and preferred to hang around the bus terminal and airport for an extra four hours than spend any more time in this hell-hole.
Although we are relatively easy-going and weren't expecting the Ritz, the location of this accommodation and the desire to spend as little money as possible whilst seeing Venice ABSOLUTELY DID NOT make up for the experience of staying in this dump. Spend the extra tenner a night each and stay somewhere else.
