“Great Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2010

The location of this hotel is great. Very close to the train station, making it walkable once you reach Venice by train or by bus. The hotel building and the furniture in the room are quite old, but clean. My husband said the bathroom smelled moldy, but honestly I couldn't smell anything! The staff was very friendly and efficient. We requested Canal view and experienced Venice from the room while we were getting ready in the morning. The kids enjoyed seeing Fire/emergency boat, trash collecting boat, public waterboats, delivery boats! No internet available. Breakfast was at a cafe across the canal - basic croissant and coffee. Check in is at sister hotel Hotel Marte - again across the canal. There was no one at the front desk during the day. You always have to go across the canal to Hotel Marte to talk to someone - which was ok but I thought was a bit uncomforting knowing anyone can walk into the hotel without anyone seeing them. I made sure I locked the door multiple times before leaving! :-) Overall, decent place if you are only planning on coming back to the hotel for sleeping and is looking for something affordable in Venice.

“Dirty room but nice staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 June 2009

We stayed here for a couple days in Nov 2007 and can vividly remember how dirty the room was. Also, the shower was also dirty and clogged for the time we stayed; the cleaning staff could never seem to resolve this issue.

And, if you can't handle stairs, don't even attempt to stay here since it's a 3 story walk up and quite steep. On top of that, it's all ceramic tile so it could be a little tricky to maneuver.

On the bright side though, it is in a good location since it's just a short walk from the train station, on a canal (if you like this), and close to lots of stuff - but, proximity isn't an issue in Venice :) Also, the staff was nice and they did try to help.

In short though, I don't think that I'd stay here again but I think that it could be an option for someone who can't afford anything else or just need a place to crash.

“The Old Bait and Switch”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2009

You can make a reservation and try to stay at this hotel, but just know that there is a very real possibility that you may not be permitted to do so once you arrive. After an early morning train into Venice, we arrived at the hotel very much looking forward to putting our bags down and taking a nice, refreshing shower.

When we got to the front desk however, the receptionist (who was very nice, incidentally) informed us that the light fixture was broken in the room assigned to us and that she had made reservations for us at their 3 star sister hotel, Hotel Universo.

This was not what we wanted to hear. Although everything worked out in the end, it's hard not to feel like you're getting hosed when they pull the old bait and switch. You'll see from the other reviews that this is not an unfrequent occurence at this hotel.

So we pick up our bags and trampse over to the Hotel Universo, which is even closer to the train station and a perfectly okay hotel. See my separate review of the Hotel Universo for further details.

Since we didn't get to actually stay at the Hotel Martee e Biasin, I can only base this overall rating on our attempted check-in experience. Needless to say that we booked the Hotel Martee e Biasin because we wanted to stay there and specifically there - it overlooked a canal for Pete's sake - not at a comparable hotel or a better hotel, but at that exact hotel. You have to roll with the punches when you're travelling, especially when you're not staying at the nicest places where you can expect a certain level of service, but if you want to actually stay at the same hotel you reserved and can avoid this type of experience, you might as well, right?

“Good Hotel at economical price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2008

We stayed there for 2 nights, it was good although i read lot of bad things about the hotel. But i found it quite reasonable at this price. Rooms were nice with clean bedsheets, towel and with cable tv. Towels were changed on both days of our stay. Hair dryers were available in the toilet. Shared washrooms were cleaned.

Only cons is the noise factor, you can hear the sound if someone is walking in the corridor, or talking or watching TV in adjecent room.

  • Liked — location, price
  • Disliked — rooms upstairs with no lift, close proximity of rooms

“Stay away. Right away. Far, far away!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2007

Most of the reviews I have read here are accurate. All the bad ones. I wish I had read them before I subjected my wife and myself to the horrors that are the Marte.

The old manager is indeed rude, with poor english. I am also surprised to find that breakfast is available with the room. That information was never made available to us.

The stench from the drains, the mosquitos in the room (12 one night) and the wafer thin walls in the rooms all add to a feral and objectionable stay. The benefit of thin walls is that you get to hear the rude manager talking on the phone until three in the morning on some nights... thats real fun!!!

Upsides are its great location, and the english speaking staff during the day are helpful, but none of that is enough to make me think about torturing myself ever again.

Enjoy Venice, just stay somewhere else. I strongly suggest you stay in Padua (Padova) and take the half hour train to Venice. Padua is wonderful and cheaper than Venice, so you get better rooms for your $/Euro. Also, as a university city, the restaurants are used to offering large meals for less money.
