In regards to Venice, you cannot get a better location than Hotel Canaletto (unless you're a millionaire maybe). It is smack bang in the middle of Piazza San Marco and the Rialto. Though I do suggest arriving in the day time because Venice is hard enough to navigate, let alone in the dark. Hotel Canaletto can be tricky to find, but once you've found it, you wont lose it. The hotel staff provide great instructions.
This was my second stay at Hotel Canaletto, I stayed previously with my family in Sept 2004. I loved it the first time and had to go back. I took my boyfriend this time and he loved it as well.
The decor is so nice, the rooms I've stayed in all a nice size and the furniture very comfortable.
I preferred having a room at the front of the hotel, I liked havign a view of the street, this time I only had a view of another building right next door.
Beware of heavy bags because there is no elevator - but it isnt impossible.
Also, there may be a little bit of a smell sometimes, but that's Venice, I dont think you can escape it with the dampness all over the city, but it was worse when I stayed in Winter rather than the time I stayed in Autumn.
If I return to Venice again, I'd return to Canaletto again. There is also a restaurant around the corner I adored, Marco Polo I think, wanted to go there for dinner every night!
Hope this helps you :)

We would like to thank our Guests for choosing our hotel for their stay in Venice and for writing about their experience with us; we appreciated both the positive feedbacks and the negative ones - the latter very few indeed – as we are sure that through that we can improve where we are defective and make our Guests’ stay even more pleasant and satisfactory.
With regard to this we are glad to inform all of you that in these days we could find a definitive solution to a problem that some of our Guests pointed out and that has been annoying us for some time. After long and troublesome fieldwork we’ve been able to locate the cause of the bad smell that sometimes filled the air in the left-luggage office at the ground floor: it was caused by underground works carried on in a public area by a private company and ordered by the city government. Some workers have inadvertently clogged a pipe of the hotel sewage system; besides that the bad smell was also due to rising and decreasing of the sea tides.
In an attempt to clear ourselves we can assure our Guests that we strove to solve the problem at once and tried not to affect their stay. Almost on the brink of frustration as we couldn’t find where the problem was, eventually we succeeded.
We apologize once more to all those Guests who have met with the drawback and, certain to win your understanding, we look forward to meeting you again at Hotel Canaletto.
