“240 Steps to the Doge's Palace”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

Location, Location, Location. The Hotel Commercio & Pellegrino is near the San Zaccaria vaporetto stop & only 100 steps from Gondole Danieli (prominently shown in Depp's & Jolie's movie, "The Tourist".

The Doge's Palace public entrance is 240 steps from the front door of the Hotel C&P, 404 steps to the Bell Tower/Campanile & 465 steps to St. Mark's Cathedral entrance. This is great if you are touring St. Mark's Plaza & want to return to your room for a break or go for an evening walk when the crowds have thinned out.

Our room was adequate, neat & clean. We stayed at the Hotel C&P for 3 nights. It was expensive, but we were willing to pay for its central location.

If you can live without bacon, eggs, biscuits & gravy for breakfast, you will find the crescent rolls, yogurt, muesli, cold cuts, cheese, juice, coffee, tea...at the Hotel C&P more than satisfactory to start your day.

The poorest & most expensive meal we had was at a restaurant recommended by a Hotel C&P desk clerk. The best meals we had were at a restaurant in the Arsenale neighborhood about 3/4 of a mile from the hotel. Stroll along the broad cement walk or get off at the Arsenale vaporetto stop. Look for a wide street lined with restaurants--we ate the 4th or 5th one in on the left. Its tourist menus had very good food at reasonable prices.

“Just Round The Corner From St. Mark`s Square.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

This Hotel is tucked away in a narrow street just to the right (as you get off the vaporetto) of St. Mark`s Square. It can be reached from the waterfront or via St. Mark`s Square. It is a small hotel not a large lavish `cost a packet` job but perfectly adequate and well placed. Quite a few people were there overnighting before joining their cruise ships.
The staff speak perfect English and are very helpful. They suggested where to eat (and told us where NOT to eat as there are many places that will not give good value for money) and the restaurant they sent us to had good food, wine, surroundings and was not too expensive(for Venice!) You do have to be prepared to pay more for everything there so just choose within your price range from the menu.
Bedrooms in the hotel were very clean and comfortable, quite spacious with good beds, air conditioning and en suite.
There was a lift but you had to walk up the stairs to the top floor where we were.(Not a problem). We slept well and it was quiet despite there being many guests.
Breakfast was on par for Italy, coffee, tea, some cereals, rolls, ham and cheese and when I sent my husband down to get me a cup of tea before getting up (yes, in bed!) they gave him a tray with a lovely pot of tea, cup and saucer.(As normal in Med countries no tea/coffee facilities in the room so take your own if you want it.)
All the staff were friendly and helpful and we thought the price was very reasonable for where it was. We were very central. Also the little bar at the end of the street was brilliant with very locals prices. Handy tip - Don`t sit down for drinks or they put an extra euro on each drink.
We loved our stay and the hotel and found good places to eat and drink within our budget.
We would definitely stay there again.

“Great location and staff!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

My husband and I spend 3 nights at the Hotel Commercio & Pellegrino, and we really enjoyed it.

The location is amazing. Just steps from the San Zaccaria vaporetto stop (which you can take to and from the airport) and steps from St. Mark's, Doge's Palace, and a bunch of places to eat.

The room was small, but most hotel rooms in Italy are small! It was neat, clean and quiet. The bed and pillows were hard, but we found this in all of the hotels we stayed in. We were so tired at the end of every night, so we both slept fine. The people at the front desk were very friendly and always willing to help us out with directions and restaurant recommendations. There was a strike the day we left for Florence, and the man at the front desk told us about the strike, and gave us an alternative route to the train station. Breakfast was basic (it was actually the same food that was served at the two other hotels we stayed at in Italy) but it was fine for a nice, light breakfast. I had no problems eating a croissant for breakfast every morning!

All in all, I would recommend this hotel to someone who is looking for a basic, no frills, yet clean and well located hotel in Venice.

“Amazing location and not much else”

Absolutely perfect location - it's a less than 2 minute walk to St. Mark's Square. The staff is friendly enough, and the rooms are neat, but that's where the positives end. My husband and I are from NYC, so we fully understand how expensive things are, but to pay $330 a night to stay in a room the size of a closet, with mold on the walls is unacceptable. And to top it all off, we were woken up every morning at 9 am to the ridiculously loud yammering of housekeeping. Is it really necessary or considerate to SCREAM when talking to one other, especially when guests are trying to get some sleep? Apparently the hotel was also having some issues with the wi-fi, because each morning at about 10 there was drilling going on right outside our door. This is the second hotel I've stayed at in Venice, and I will not be returning, nor would I recommend it.

“Stellar Location”

Around the corner from the Bridge of Sighs, Doge Palace, and San Marco (St. Mark's Square) this is a perfect location for the first time tourist. It's also on a small but lively street, and close to restaurants including the best sandwich place, in the world, Birreria Forst right next door! Try the porcetta with special sauce. You won't regret it! Staff was helpful and the room was clean and comfortable enough with windows overlooking the busy street below. Breakfast is good, with pitchers of coffee and milk brought to the tables. If you must take an early flight, it is only steps from this hotel (and then left) to the San Zaccaria Waterbus which begins around 3:50 am and goes to the airport in about 1 hour 20 minutes, then an easy 17 minute walk around the building to the airport entrance. A relief that it was so easy. I found this hotel through EuropeanDestinations.com, was very reasonably priced, and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
