“It was fine”

Great spot.We had 6 nights at start of September.
If you fly in you can get an express bus to the bus station for 5euro and it is one bridge and about 700 metres to the continental.
Water taxi to door is 110 euro although it is a similar walk from air terminal to water taxis as it is from bus station to Continental.
The room we had was adequate(bigger than the 4 star we stayed in London)the bathroom small but well appointed and it was clean(not my choice of decoration...but hey)We were fortunate to have a corner room with canal views from all windows.....magnificent.The pillows were small...the only negative I can come up with.
The ferry is about a 5 minute walk, and then about ten minutes to St Marks or the Rialto.
We tended to ferry to a major attraction and walk back having drinks lunch or dinner in the back streets, which is the wonderful part of Venice....the major attractions are outstanding but the backstreet cafes and bars are steeped in tradition(also find real artisans here). The continental would be an hours walk to most places or 3 if stopping at a few bars.
Breakfast was good and we had no trouble getting tables on the canal........it can at times get a little Fawlty Towers but if you take it the right way it becomes amusing.
The front staff were fine, perhaps to the point, but we had no issues.
I will add there appeared to be a lot of Tours and they seemed to be on the wingy side. One american said what do we do if there is fire alluding to the corridors,I told him follow the instructions.I also read that the foyer toilets were not upto scratch, fair dinkum, they were alright.
Maybe we were lucky but I would have no hesitation going back.

“just off...”

We were looking for a decent and affordable place close to the train station. If these are your requirements, Continental is okay.

We requested a twin room. We were shown to a double room. We immediately asked if there was no twin available, so the porter contacted the reception desk and we were taken to a room meeting our reservation request. Although I am quite sure we would have had kind a a view from this room, I also noticed thick layers of dust on the armatures and the over all impression was very depressing.

So we walked the sauna like corridors to arrive to the room we did use during our stay. This room had a more up to date appearance (headboard jugendstil like). The place reminded me of the claustrophobic experience at the Sistine Chapel: no where to flee in case of fire... And indeed the room did not show a map the nearest emergency exits. There were metal bars in front of the windows. The 'view' was the hotel room of other guests 3-4 meters accross an inner court, which itself was filled up with trash, ac units and scaffolds.

What else:
We did not dare to use the elevator, which reminded us of elevators we have seen in communist countries.
The toilets in the lounge are a big insult to paying customers.
The hotel bar which the hotel claims to have is in fact out side of the hotel, so a seasonal terrace.
The hotel boasts to have an extensive wine list, but in reality they have just a few wines to sell, which are also not very impressive.
The lounge is like a waiting area in a train station, but with plush chairs.
The breakfast area is lovely, when you are lucky enough to sit in the area near the Canal, but the bigger part of the room is dark, cellar like and uninviting.
As high tide was expected one morning break fast was to be served in the room. We are not sure why, because we did not see any water getting into the hotel/break fast area.
One night around 5AM an alarm went off. We had no idea if this was a fire alarm or what ever, smelled nothing, saw no one, so were left wondering what was going on.
The ac in our room was disconnected (no- not broken!) and the room was very hot. Leaving our windows open was met every single day by the cleaning staff closing it again.
Also the shower was disconnected (but there was a bath).
During weekdays 8AM builders start working and shouting.
We had to check out at noon and left our luggage in the storage. When we came to get it, obviously we were no longer guests of the hotel and we were no longer greeted in a pleasant way by the receptionist.

So, if in fact you would like to have a drink at the hotel bar, go to next door hotel Principe. You can also use the toilets there!
Right across the street there is a little pizza restaurant, not adding costs for a 'coperto' nor adding 12% service. Consider it as a cafeteria and you will not be disappointed. A bit more in the direction of the train station you will find Brek restaurant. A chain, all over Italy. They have good, honest and affordable food, but this is not the place to be for a special occasion.

As mentioned: We were looking for a decent and affordable place close to the train station. Unfortunately the hotel of our 1st choice was fully booked. So we will not book here again, unless we have to.

“Overpriced and lousy service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2011

We stayed at the continental for one night. The room was small and not particulalrly clean. It was impossible to use the shower without flooding the bathroom. The buffet breakfast was a shambles as they had booked several bus groups in to the hotel at the same time. I would not stay there again.

“Stay Away”

Old, tired, dirty, The shower was disgusting( a rusty metal box, door would not close, shower head would not stay in place). Very, very dirty sheer curtains that gave us no privacy unless the shutters were closed and then had no fresh air and room was dark and depressing.
Restaurant is nice having outdoor service on the Grand Canal. The hotel is far removed from St. Mark's and the best parts of venice. It is about an hour walk.
There are hundreds of hotel in Venice, you can find one much better and convenient.

“Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

This hotel is in a great location - easily accessible to railway and airport shuttle bus. As with most Italian hotels the rooms are small but adequate. Breakfast was good and we tool advantage of a 20euro meal offer and it was excellent value.
