“Weeks skiing in Courmayeur”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 March 2011

A Mark Warner chalethotel. Good staff and food. Rooms o.k. The sat/cable tv doesn't have any english-speaking channels ... Mark Warner won't pay for the subscriptions.

Paper thin bedroom walls; I was lucky that as a one-off, the hotel was mostly occupied by of one like-minded group all week. Some unlucky fellow skiers were woken by the same selfish three people returning at 3 a.m., twice. Most weeks would be noisier, as mixed guests of varying social habits.

Resort has non-existent nightlife. Relaxed, classy Bar Roma for 3 p.m. onwards, and another up the street apparenty. Very posh shops. Traffic free main street. Clean resort.

Resort village itself dead in the week. Locals said been like this for a few years. Wealthy Italians arrive on Sat & Sun.

Good ski-ing. Only lift queues on sunny weekends. Holds snow well and much better than Chamonix the other side of Mont Blanc. Don't bother with daytrips on crowded slow buses to Pila or La Thuile/La Rosiere ... why waste huge chunks of day on a bus, for average skiing elsewhere?

“Helpful staff, warm and comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2011

Just spent a week here with a group of friends on a skiing holiday. Hotel is a bit scruffy, but warm with comfortable beds and lots of hot water even when everyone is showering/bathing at the end of the day. Lots of food, excellent tea when you come in off the slopes. Skiing is great for intermediates, not so good for beginners; difficult to find a mountain bar that a nervous beginner can reach as all the blue runs have steep bits at their starts.

Our only complaint - and it's a big one - dinner took on average more than 2 hours to serve 3 courses. Start times are staggered, so some nights we began our dinner at 8.30 and didn't finish until nearly 11 pm. Usually waited 40 minutes until the ( very simple ) starters arrived, another half hour until main course and we'd lost the will to live after waiting another half hour for pudding. The food is good, but not as special as the somewhat pretentious chef would have you believe; he'd be better getting his kitchen moving rather than wandering around chatting to guests.

“Much better than expected!”

I admit, I was worried. No recent reviews, and quite a few negative old ones.
Courmayeur the village - quaint and beautiful, not at all purpose built. Just gorgeous. Although only a handful of bars and restaurants the quality is great. Shopping is very good - upscale and classy.
Access to ski - the gondola is a very short walk from the hotel, not a problem at all. You can leave your gear in a locker by the gondola (€10 for the week) or easily carry snowboards back to the Cristallo.
The mountain - small but very nice. Lot's of trees, a bit like Copper Mountain Colorado. Great on mountian restaurants. Fun for ski and snowboard (the reds are easy, the blacks are more like tough reds - great for building confindence)
Ok, now the hotel:
This hotel is operated by Mark Warner, with mainly British guests and staff. I booked with a singles group (each had solo rooms, so instead of 70+ guests there were 34 of us for the week) It was just great. The staff went out of thier way to make us comfortable, they were proactive in asking if there were any food allergies, or other special needs, and were always on hand to answer questions.
It's true the rooms are a bit old fashioned, but the wooden walls and stone floors add to the charm. I was on the 4th floor and the view was amazing. Like most chalet hotels, you can hear noise in the corridor but it was never that bad.
Perhaps my expectations were just really low, but I dont think so. The staff make this a great place, and it's really a nicely located cozy hotel.

“Beware the single rooms over the bar”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 March 2010

The staff do their best, but the hotel walls are very thin, so the rooms are very noisy. I was in a single room, right over the bar. Do not expect to sleep before midnight, unless you are a heavy sleeper or have taken wax ear plugs!

“Tired hotel with good food and hard working team”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 March 2010

The hotel has some character in public areas.Bedroom on 3rd floor was clean, but in need of refurbishment. There was fabric stapled to the wardrobe doors, as many different woods as you could fit in one room, hilarious light fittings! The staff in the hotel worked very hard, and were generally friendly/sociable. It is a good team, which helps to compensate for what the hotel lacks in style. The food was really good and plentiful.
Being half term week, the bar was very busy and sometimes hard to find seating if not part of the larger groups. Fireplace tucked in one corner so would be difficult for most people in bar to benefit from it, but in any case no fire lit (notice board in front of it). Some of the rooms did resemble those in brochure (though not ours!).
We were staying half term week and breakfast on first morning was stressful. There was a deadline to go up for ski fitting and the food kept running out. The rest of the week was much better. Again, probably because of half term, the ski-fitting service was horrendous; disorganised, took an hour and a half and then over the next couple of days we had to change ill-fitting boots in 2 out of 3 cases!
Courmayeur town is pretty, with bars, shops and restaurants. The ski area was mainly reds so there was not much choice for beginners, and the blue slopes were very crowded, as the resort was busy, and again I guess that's half term! Not a big ski area so unless you are happy going on the same slopes it is limited after a few days. The ski pass does allow for 2 days elsewhere in Aosta if you are happy to get a bus, but then you need to come down to the town with your skis and boots the day before and there is a bit of walking involved. We were relatively inexperienced skiers so there was enough challenge for us! The bars/cafes on the slopes were heaving at lunchtime and in many cases needed booking (probably half term again) so for those participating in the Mark Warner ski hosting there was the added advantage this was all booked for you.
