I admit, I was worried. No recent reviews, and quite a few negative old ones.
Courmayeur the village - quaint and beautiful, not at all purpose built. Just gorgeous. Although only a handful of bars and restaurants the quality is great. Shopping is very good - upscale and classy.
Access to ski - the gondola is a very short walk from the hotel, not a problem at all. You can leave your gear in a locker by the gondola (€10 for the week) or easily carry snowboards back to the Cristallo.
The mountain - small but very nice. Lot's of trees, a bit like Copper Mountain Colorado. Great on mountian restaurants. Fun for ski and snowboard (the reds are easy, the blacks are more like tough reds - great for building confindence)
Ok, now the hotel:
This hotel is operated by Mark Warner, with mainly British guests and staff. I booked with a singles group (each had solo rooms, so instead of 70+ guests there were 34 of us for the week) It was just great. The staff went out of thier way to make us comfortable, they were proactive in asking if there were any food allergies, or other special needs, and were always on hand to answer questions.
It's true the rooms are a bit old fashioned, but the wooden walls and stone floors add to the charm. I was on the 4th floor and the view was amazing. Like most chalet hotels, you can hear noise in the corridor but it was never that bad.
Perhaps my expectations were just really low, but I dont think so. The staff make this a great place, and it's really a nicely located cozy hotel.
