“Perfect summer holiday in Meran(o)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2009

The Villa Tivoli is a perfect place to spend a relaxing week in Meran(o), Italy, a spa town in the German- (but also Italian-) speaking South Tyrol region of northern Italy, adjacent to the Dolomites. It is owned an operated by two generations of the Defranceschi-Steiner family, true hospitality professionals whose warmth and helpfulness ensure that your every need is fulfilled, indeed, anticipated! Beautifully located in a private botanical garden in a quiet part of Meran(o), it is a short walk or bus ride to the center of town and the train station. The hotel restaurant is one of the best in town, and half-board guests enjoy sumptuous breakfasts with great Italian coffee, coffee & cake in the afternoon and a 5-course gourmet dinner. The wine list features a great variety of excellent and reasonably priced local wines. The hotel has both indoor and outdoor pools, the latter is fed by the hotel's own spring water. The hotel has several different room types at varying prices; we stayed in the smallest type, which had a beautiful view of Meran(o) and a balcony but no cross-ventilation. It was not air conditioned and we were there during a heat wave, so it got a bit warm at night. Adjacent to the hotel is a residence run by the same owners which is particularly suitable for families. The region is rich in hiking and walking opportunities (one hike takes you to where Oetzi, the Ice Man, was found) and you will find the hotel staff eager to help you plan your day's outing in accordance with your interests and abilities.

“This is a great hotel”

This is one of the nicest places I have every stayed. The rooms are perfect: I had a balcony with views of the mountains. It was wonderfully appointed and very quiet. The food is 1st class: dinners are 4 courses and served with flair.

The hotel is in a very quiet location within 10 minutes walk from the city center of Merano. The service is amazing: I woke up at 6:00 each morning to check email, and was greeted with a pot of wonderful coffee. I also had to express mail back some documents, and the Defranceschi's son personally went to the right place to do this for me. As a family tun hotel, everyone is accomodating and helpful.

The hotel has only 4 starts: it should have more.

“Magnificent stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2007

What a delight to arrive at a hotel after travelling and receive a warm welcome from the owner, along with a glass of prosecco. We felt very comfortable right away.
Our room was quiet, with beautiful views and easy access to the outdoor pool. A bag with towels, robes and slippers was provided which made swimming preparation very easy.
Novel use was made of the wardrobes. They acted as room dividers between the bedroom and bathroom but could be accessed from either side. It made us giggle!
The hotel also has a restaurant, the Artemis, where gourmet meals of 5 courses (or 3 if preferred) were served in the evening. The food was superb. The owner suggested a red and a white wine to accompany the meals and each was provided by the glass or the bottle, or a wine list could be consulted if preferred. The service provided by the family members and staff was polite but friendly and extremely thoughtful.
Breakfasts were an absolute joy! We have stayed in 5 star hotels which did not match the choice and quality of food provided. The buffet style meant it was difficult for us to mind our diets!!
The owners of this establishment deserve great praise for their hard work and efforts to please their guests.
The hotel, although a 15 minute walk to the town centre, is well situated for easy access by car to the main highway and on to routes for the Alps and the Dolomites.
Should we decide to return to Merano we would have no hesitation in choosing to stay here again.

“Lovely hideaway in South Tyrol”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 May 2007

We spent our extended weekend in the end of April 2007 in Villa Tivoli in Merano. We found the villa by looking for small boutique/elegant/luxury hotels in the www. After reviewing what was available on the villa website and several hotel review websites, we decided to give it a try and booked our stay in the villa.

As the trip from Switzerland to Merano requires crossing the Alps two times, certain level of fun and good spirits is required to feel the trip enjoyable, despite countless curves on the way…. Ultimately, we reached Vinschgau Valley (Val Venosta in Italian) and felt as if Mediterranean Sea was inserted between the Alps. Brighter green colour of the (Mediterranean) flora, smiling relaxed people… and finally there was Villa Tivoli surrounded by beautiful and rich garden and several vineyards. We were wonderfully welcomed by lovely Natalie, offered Prosecco and shortly introduced into the hotel and the city of Merano. It was just like in heaven… The room (Camelia) was quite spacious as well as the bathroom (we would have been happy with less) and decorated with taste. The most stunning part was the view – the city of Merano, surrounding vineyards and high mountains in the background.

The food in the restaurant was great – not pretentious, home made, tastefully served and of supreme taste (as the south Tyrolean wines)!! Our favourite was the breakfast buffet – very rich, with a great choice of breads and cheeses, south Tyrolean ham (referred to as bacon), pickled vegetables, muesli, yogurth, cakes…. whatever you may want to have, which was followed by great Italian coffee. We looked forward to every new day in the villa Tivoli.

The family that runs the villa, Defranceschis, is just great. So far, we have not experienced such a warm welcome, kindness and thoughtfulness in a hotel of any kind. Unique and excellent!

What we experienced was beyond our expectation – it was just fantastic! Hard to believe, but it's true!!
We will definitively come back to villa Tivoli, a little jewel of South Tyrol.
