Leave your "buongiorno" in your suitcase and unpack your "guten morgen." The map may say you're in northern Italy, but this area is more Austria than Italy.
This charming hotel is in the heart of Castelrotto's medieval center and is as Austrian as can be. It is a gem - like something out of a fairy tale. The photos on their website only hint at the alpine beauty. We were lucky enough to visit on the last few days of Summer, right after a 40 cm snowfall, It was magical.
The hotel's owner was very helpful. She answered all our questions about how to get to Alpe de Suisse and recommended a variety of hikes. She also gave us a prepared two-page sheet of local information, including restaurant recommendations.
Although part of the building dates back to the 13th century, the hotel rooms are comfortable and modern. The bedding is spectacular, including crisply ironed bed linens, duvets, and down pillows. They were the most comfortable we found on our three-week Italian vacation.
The hotel has a high-efficiency washer downstairs (5 euros, including detergent) and a free dryer. After three weeks of travel, it was a pleasure to wash and dry an entire load of laundry at a bargain price.
The hotel literally locks its doors at 7 pm, as do most of the village stores, and the owner leaves the building. Hotel guests are given a key which opens the front and back door. Speaking of the back door, the hotel offers free parking in the rear of the building. This hotel is also conveniently located for vacationers traveling by bus.The bus system is very efficient in this area and in fact the main bus stop of the village is just outside the back entrance of the hotel.
