We stayed at the Dock for one night as we took the trains into Porta Susa from Chambery France. The next day we carried on by train to Milan to fly out of Europe. The Chambery-Turin train is a particularly painless way to get between France and Italy if you want to avoid the huge one way car hire drop off charges incurred by dropping a car in another country. Both cities are easy to deal with, charming and formerly part of the same Savoy kingdom. As noted by another author it is deviously complicated to work out how to get out of Porta Susa station but with the aid of GPS we made it to the right exit.
The Dock is very close to the station but this being lovely Turin a railwayside location does not come with any grottyness. The reception staff were faultlessly helpful and friendly. We had a quad room with a double and 2 single beds. The room was fairly characterless but it was clean and reasonably sized with a small internal facing balcony. It was the first hotel we stayed at with a Biday which fascinated my 2 and 4 year olds. Breakfast was quite elaborate as far as continental budget to mid-range hotels go and it was included in the price.
We arrived at about 2:30, after lunch would normally be served but the man who ran the bar under the hotel took pity and provided us with an excellent meal - 3 pastas, 2 beers, 1 coffee and bread for less than 20 I think. You will never go hungry in Italy.
The historic centre is a very pleasant walk down lovely porticoed sidewalks. I had no preconceptions for Turin and was hugely impressed. It is an extremely grand place and there is barely a tourist a site. I could happily have spent a few days here, or perhaps moved there to live.
