I like this hotel. I want to like it even more, but the age and wear on everything gets in the way of a great hotel experience.
First, the location is prime. The hotel is next to the main train station, across the street from a lovely park, and more or less in the center of the old city of Torino. For sight-seeing, people watching and history, you can't beat the location. When I saw where the hotel was located I was thrilled, because the NH Hotel chain always does a splendid job with the urban properties. I was really looking forward to a great hotel.
Next, the staff. These people are simply wonderful. The front desk team, the restaurant staff, Marco the bartender, the chambermaids -- everyone of them wants you to enjoy your stay. They absolutely go out of their way to be as helpful as possible.
Lastly, the building itself -- probably 100 years old, the front is a massive arcade with huge columns lining the street. The entire road from the train station to the Royal Palace (maybe 1.2 km northward) is lined with this colunnade. It keeps you out of the sun and the rain, it's illuminated at night; the setting is just perfect.
So you're thinking, five-stars, here I come, right?
Not so fast.
Because management has really let this hotel become tired and worn. After a while, it's a problem.
The rooms are reasonably sized for Europe, but the beds are double beds pushed together to simulate a king-sized bed. The TVs are old-style and low resolution. The carpets are straight from the 1970s. The draps are dingy and the windows don't open. The bathrooms are clean and functional, but tiny and bare-bones.
The elevators are so small, people exit and enter single-file.
The bar is sub-par, AND it only opens at 7pm and closes at 10pm. What's up with that?
The restaurant is adequate, but certainly not suited for a business meeting. I would NEVER bring a guest there. And, in the morning, the menu at the breakfast buffet never changes. After a week, I'm dying for a fried egg, an omlet, a pancake, SOMETHING different, but it's not going to happen.
Internet access is barely acceptable.
So all in all, it doesn't make the grade as a professional business hotel. The NH Chain really needs to upgrade this facility. On the other hand, if you can book in at a steep discount, it would be a terrific spot for a long weekend. Just don't pay full price (like I did, dammit).
