I arrived in Milan quite late in the evening and went to the first affordable-looking hotels on the square in front of the station. This turned out to be full but the receptionist directed me to the Via Vitruvio where, he said, there were many inexpensive hotels.
I tried a few but they were either a bit expensive or full. Got to Salerno and it was both affordable and had a single on the first floor at the front. Another reviewer points out that the trams are noisy. They are. However, I can sleep through anything so didn't regard this as a problem. If you are a light sleeper, it will be.
The room was small but clean. Two single beds. Bathroom contained a wash-basin and shower. A bit cramped but certainly fit for purpose.
What I did find spectacular was the plasma TV and a choice of several hundred TV and radio stations! Not unusual if you're staying at a 5 star hotel but exceptional at the Salerno level.
Breakfast was good. Staff were extremely amiable.
Possibly not the most ideal hotel for business travellers or honeymooners but for the casual gypsy it's good value for money. Not exactly at the pulsating heart of the city but near to a main artery.
