I stayed at the Hotel Ariston for four nights. I was underwhelmed by it and when I had the chance to stay there again, I went elsewhere with no regrets.
Room:
4 Nights in a Single Room.
Positive:
1) Very close to the Duomo and many restaurants.
2) Close to the Cadorna train station if you are coming on the Malpensa express. Also within walking distance of both the red and green subway lines.
3) Hidden Gem: There is a great little bakery off a side street near buy. This was my favorite thing about the hotel (although they do serve breakfast).
4) Room includes a fridge. A little supermarket is down the street if you want to buy and keep cold water.
Negatives:
1) If you are a light sleeper, you may be concerned about the ambient road noise. I trolley would drive by at night and I could hear it on the fifth floor. Also, the road outside is cobble stone style so when cars would drive by at night (often too fast), I could hear it in my room and sometimes in the night and early morning would wake me. My friend who was in the room next to me did not notice though.
2) The single room is tiny (only around 100 sq ft or 9.3 sq m). If the double is not much more expensive, get the double. This seemed small even compared to Italian standards.
3) No irons in the room but this is common with 3 stars hotel in Milan. If you need an iron, you probably should by one. The only iron is hard fixed to the wall in a single maid's closet.
4) Internet is spotty and often does not work at all. During main hours of 5pm to 10:30, it was almost entirely unusable.
5) Staff is often rude and unhelpful, even compared to other Italian hotels.
6) While you can not blame them nor should it necessarily be expected, we arrived a little early and hoped for an early check in (as did many other guests coming from the US), but it seems they were late getting rooms prepared.
Conclusion:
There are enough good hotels in the area that you can do better for your money.
Room Tip: The higher the floor, hopefully the noise will be left. I could still hear it on the fifth floor.
